Turkey are back at the World Cup for the first time since 2002, ending a 24-year absence that has felt increasingly painful for one of Europe’s most passionate football nations.
Their return is the story of a generation; Arda Guler at Real Madrid, Kenan Yildiz at Juventus, Hakan Calhanoglu captaining the side from Inter Milan.
This is the most talented Turkish squad since that third-place finish in Korea and Japan, and they arrive in North America with the belief that they can do something memorable.
The qualification story is remarkable in its own right. Turkey were hammered 6-0 by Spain in Konya; a humiliating result that suggested their campaign was over before it had properly begun. Instead they clawed back, finished just three points behind Spain in the group, and then won both playoff matches 1-0 against Romania and Kosovo. Kerem Akturkoglu scored the winner that sent the nation into delirium. Turkey are here because they refused to give up.
Turkey are drawn in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside co-hosts USA, Paraguay and Australia. They open against Australia in Vancouver on June 14, face Paraguay in Santa Clara, and then the defining match against the USA in Los Angeles on June 25. “We have the players. We have the belief. Turkey belongs at the World Cup.” – Hakan Calhanoglu
Appearances: 3 | Best finish: 3rd place (2002) | 24 years since last appearance
1954: First World Cup appearance in Switzerland. Eliminated in a play-off against West Germany after finishing level on points. A respectable debut that showed Turkey could compete at this level.
2002: The greatest moment in Turkish football history. Third place at the Korea-Japan World Cup under Senol Gunes. Beat Senegal, Japan and co-hosts South Korea on the way to the semi-finals, where they lost to Brazil. Finished third after beating South Korea in the third-place play-off. Hakan Sukur scored the fastest goal in World Cup history against South Korea.
2026: Return after 24 years. Qualified through the UEFA playoffs, beating Romania and Kosovo with 1-0 victories in each match. Drawn in Group D with USA, Paraguay and Australia.
Italian · Appointed 2023 · Former AC Milan, Fiorentina, Sevilla manager · First World Cup as Turkey manager
Vincenzo Montella has been the architect of Turkey’s resurgence since taking charge in 2023. He guided Turkey to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, where they were beaten by the Netherlands, and has built a squad identity around the creativity of Guler and Yildiz while maintaining the defensive solidity that Calhanoglu provides from midfield.
His preferred 4-2-3-1 is fluid and attack-minded in possession, with the front four of Guler, Yildiz, Akturkoglu and a striker given significant freedom to interchange and create. The double pivot of Calhanoglu and a partner provides the defensive balance.
Montella is at his best when he has creative players to work with; this Turkey squad gives him more of that quality than any previous coaching assignment in his career. The 6-0 defeat to Spain in qualifying is the one result that concerns opponents; not because it happened, but because of how little it affected Turkey’s belief.
Formation: 4-2-3-1 (with 4-3-3 pressing variant)
Montella’s 4-2-3-1 is built on Calhanoglu as the deep-lying playmaker alongside a more defensive partner, with three creative players operating across the attacking midfield line. Guler functions as the number ten, dropping deep to receive and drive forward. Yildiz operates from the left, cutting inside onto his right foot. Akturkoglu provides pace and directness from the right.
Turkey’s most dangerous attacking moments come from Guler’s ability to find pockets of space between the opposition’s lines and release runs with one-touch combinations. He led all Real Madrid players for chances created in the 2025-26 season with 111 key passes; that vision and passing range at international level makes Turkey genuinely difficult to defend against in the final third.
The vulnerability is defensive. Turkey were beaten 6-0 by Spain in qualifying and can be exposed by teams with pace in behind when the full-backs push forward. Paraguay and Australia will both identify this weakness. Montella’s system asks his players to press aggressively out of possession, which leaves space in transition if the press is broken.
Attacking midfielder · Real Madrid · Age 21 | Turkey caps: 30+ | 20 goal contributions at Real Madrid 2025/26
The most exciting young playmaker at this World Cup and the player every neutral will want to watch. Guler at Real Madrid has established himself as one of the most creative midfielders in European football at just 21 years old; 111 key passes in the 2025-26 season, six goals and 14 assists, and the kind of vision and technique that cannot be coached. He was the standout performer at Euro 2024, scoring one of the tournament’s great goals against Georgia. At this World Cup he carries the hopes of an entire nation and the expectation of a global audience that recognizes his talent. If Guler performs, Turkey can beat anyone in this group.
Forward · Juventus · Age 21 | 3.5 completed dribbles per 90 minutes in qualifying
The second pillar of Turkey’s attacking generation and the player who gives Montella’s system its most direct threat. Yildiz at Juventus has developed into one of Serie A’s most dangerous wide forwards; his dribbling numbers in qualifying ranked among the very best in Europe, with only Jeremy Doku and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia posting better figures. He is direct, fearless and clinical in the moments that matter. Alongside Guler, he gives Turkey an attacking combination at the peak of their youth and developing careers; two 21-year-olds who feed off each other and complement each other’s qualities perfectly.
Defensive midfielder · Inter Milan · Age 32 | Turkey caps: 104
Turkey’s captain and the experienced foundation on which Montella’s entire system is built. Calhanoglu at Inter Milan won the Serie A title and is one of the most complete midfielders in European football; exceptional from set pieces, commanding in possession and the tactical organizer who holds the structure together when Guler and Yildiz push forward. With 104 caps he is Turkey’s most experienced player, and his understanding of tournament football after years at the highest level is invaluable to a squad that is returning to the World Cup for the first time in a generation. His free-kick delivery is a constant threat at set pieces.
Winger · Fenerbahce · Age 27 | Scored the qualifying winner vs Kosovo
The player who scored the goal that sent Turkey to the World Cup; a 53rd-minute strike against Kosovo in Pristina that ended the 24-year wait. Akturkoglu at Fenerbahce is direct, energetic and capable of producing decisive moments in tight matches. His pace on the right flank gives Turkey width and directness, and his big-game temperament has been evident throughout the qualifying campaign. Tied as Turkey’s top scorer in qualifying with Yildiz at three goals each. When Guler draws defenders inside, Akturkoglu is the player who arrives late and exploits the space.
LeagueLane Verdict
Turkey are the value pick in Group D and the most entertaining team to watch. Guler and Yildiz at their best is a combination that will trouble any defense in the tournament, and Montella has built a system that maximizes their qualities without sacrificing defensive stability. The opening match against Australia sets the tone; win that and Turkey are in control of their own destiny.
The betting angle is clear. Turkey to qualify from the group at current odds represents genuine value for a side with this quality in attack. Guler to score anytime across their three group games is also worth considering given his form at club level. The USA match on June 25 is the headline fixture; Guler vs Pulisic in Los Angeles could be one of the tournament’s defining individual battles.
The ceiling for this Turkey squad is the quarterfinals. They have the attacking talent to trouble anyone on their day. The floor is an early exit if the defensive vulnerabilities are exploited early. Turkey’s tournament will be defined by whether Montella can keep the defensive shape tight enough for Guler and Yildiz to win matches at the other end.
