Peter Green - June 1, 2026
The 2026 World Cup Group D is arguably one of the most evenly matched and least predictable pools across the whole tournament. The United States, who act as co-hosts, carry the huge pressure of playing in front of their home crowd alongside a formidable Turkey making a much-awaited comeback, Australia who always deliver above expectations, and a persistent Paraguay side. The United States are seen as the team most likely to qualify from the group, but this does not mean any of the four sides can be ruled out.
The USMNT comes into the home competition boasting their best-ever generation of players alongside an extremely talented tactical manager in Mauricio Pochettino. Appointed in 2024 to revamp the playing style and identity of the team, Pochettino has introduced a high-pressing, modern style that takes full advantage of the best years of key players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie.
Playing in front of a supportive home crowd is a huge boost, although there is no denying that the pressure of performing on home soil is immense. The Americans have a strong midfield and creative wingers that can navigate through opposition gaps. The biggest challenge will be dealing with the pressure of being the hunted side in a home competition.
Prediction: With the added advantage of the home crowd and Pochettino’s expertise in managing big games, the Americans should find a way through the pressure cooker to top the group.
Turkey, after a painful absence of 24 years from the world stage, have returned to grace the FIFA World Cup under the guidance of their Italian manager Vincenzo Montella. They are now regarded as one of the most well-coordinated teams in the tournament, thanks to Montella’s tactical brilliance that brings out the best from each player.
With star players Arda Guler of Real Madrid and Kenan Yildiz of Juventus, two of the most gifted young talents in the game, Turkey are a genuinely formidable attacking side. Their creativity and flair makes them the most entertaining team in the group and the one most likely to produce moments of individual brilliance.
Prediction: Turkey’s talent and enthusiasm are simply too much for Australia and Paraguay to handle. They are likely to secure second place in Group D.
Australia should never be underestimated. They enter each competition considered underdogs yet always manage to impress established football nations with their determination, organisation and resilience. Although they do not have world-class players in the vein of those in the USA and Turkey, the system makes them extremely hard to play against.
The Socceroos will try to frustrate their opposition, utilise their physical advantage at set pieces, and score through counterattacks. If they manage to secure points from the first couple of matches, the final matchday could prove very difficult for the other sides.
Prediction: Australia will do everything to advance from the group stage, most likely by securing a spot among the best third-placed teams.
After battling through the brutal South American qualifying series, Paraguay emerges as an experienced side that has learned how to grind out results. This team is very hard to break down; physical, defensively solid, and excellent at disrupting their opponents’ rhythm.
They will deliberately keep the game pace slow, exploit their aerial superiority, and try to capitalise on transitions with narrow 1-0 victories. Around 60% of their last 14 victories came by that scoreline. They will not win any awards for aesthetic football, but their approach is perfectly designed to make life very difficult for opponents like Turkey and the USA.
Prediction: Paraguay will make every match a hard-fought, close contest. Although they will accumulate points, a lack of scoring in open play may prevent them from advancing beyond the group stage.
12 June – United States vs Paraguay – SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles
A classic CONCACAF vs CONMEBOL battle. The USA will need to control their emotions against Paraguay’s infamous style of frustrating, physical football.
13 June – Australia vs Turkey – BC Place, Vancouver
A perfect opening battle of contrasts. If Turkey’s flair cannot find a way through Australia’s defensive block, Group D will be wide open from the start.
19 June – United States vs Australia – Lumen Field, Seattle
USA need a win to stay on track. Australia will look to frustrate and counter in front of a passionate crowd.
25 June – Turkey vs United States – SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles
The highlight fixture of the group stage. This one will surely decide who tops Group D and claims the better path to the round of 32.
This is a very interesting group to keep an eye on. Based on paper, the USA have the squad strength, the talent and the home advantage to win the group. Under Pochettino, they look determined enough to do just that.
However, do not write off Turkey. With Montella having established a strong structure, and when you factor in the sheer brilliance of Arda Guler, there is little doubt that this side will push hard for the knockout round alongside the United States.
To conclude, the USA are favourites to finish first in this group, with Turkey pushing hard for second place. Paraguay should not be dismissed; they have the defensive resilience and South American experience to cause problems for anyone on their day, and a narrow win against Australia could keep their knockout hopes alive. Australia will do everything they can to fight their way through as one of the best third-placed teams.
