The best options for Kieran Tierney

Arun - August 16, 2023

It’s been a busy summer transfer window for Arsenal, as the Gunners look to strengthen their squad for the 2023/24 league campaign. Mikel Arteta’s side finished second in the Premier League table last season, and will be looking to go one better this term under the Spaniard’s management.

The likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber have all arrived at The Emirates, and Timber’s arrival in particular could cause a potential selection dilemma for Arteta this season. The Gunners boss already has the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Kieran Tierney available to him in this position, and so it seems as though one of those could be heading for the exit door in the near future if they’re looking to secure regular game time for the upcoming league campaign.

Tierney is the left-back that looks most likely to depart Arsenal this summer, with the defender being linked with a move away from the club before the transfer window reaches a conclusion. The Scottish international has been with Arsenal since 2019, and has gone on to make 124 appearances for the English giants. However, with the arrival of Timber, it appears as though Tierney’s days at The Emirates Stadium are numbered.

It’s previously been reported that the 26-year-old has been linked with a move to the likes of Real Sociedad and Celtic to name a few. It’s been revealed by Bonus Code Bets that Real Sociedad are the favourites to strike a deal to sign Tierney this summer. Below, they’ve provided the betting odds on Sky Bet for Tierney’s next club.

  • To stay at Arsenal @ 11/10
  • Newcastle United @ 5/2
  • Real Sociedad @ 4/1
  • Celtic @ 5/1

We’ll take a more detailed look at the potential options for Tierney this summer, with just a few weeks remaining in the transfer window.

Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad were previously one of the favourites to sign Tierney before the summer transfer window closes, and they’d be more than likely to be able to offer the Scottish left-back regular game time, which is exactly what he’ll be looking for.

The Spanish side finished fourth in the La Liga table last season, and so they’ll also be competing in European competitions this term, which could see more minutes under the belt for Tierney.

Celtic

A return to Celtic Park had previously been rumoured this summer, but for one reason or another, that move failed to materialise. It’ll be interesting to see whether Celtic are to renew their interest in signing Tierney before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion, as they’re a club that the defender continues to hold in high regard. The only potential stumbling block over a potential deal would be Tierney’s potential wage demands, which could be a problem for Celtic, who could find a cheaper alternative before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion.

Newcastle United

Newcastle are a team that are heading in the right direction, as the Magpies are well-fancied to mount a serious challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League. Eddie Howe’s side had previously been keen on signing Tierney, although their interest cooled in recent weeks.

With Tino Livramento recently signing for Newcastle from Southampton, it seems as though any potential agreement between Newcastle and Tierney seems a considerable way apart.

Stay with Arsenal

Of course if a move doesn’t materialise to any of the clubs rumoured to be keen on signing Tierney, then he can opt to remain with Arsenal. He’ll have a real fight on his hands for a regular starting spot in Mikel Arteta’s team, with competition for places being fiercely competitive.

The Gunners are likely to rotate at times during the season, especially considering that they’ll also be playing Champions League football alongside their Premier League campaign. However, you have to ask the question as to whether Tierney would get in the starting XI ahead of the likes of Zinchenko or Timber. He’s too good of an option to have occupying a spot on the substitutes bench consistently, so you’d imagine that he’ll pursue a move away from Arsenal in the near future.
