Peter Green - June 3, 2026
Sweden’s qualification story is one of the most dramatic in this entire World Cup. They took just two points from six group stage matches and looked destined to miss out entirely. Then Viktor Gyokeres happened. A hat-trick against Ukraine in the playoff semi-final. An 88th-minute winner against Poland in the final. Sweden were going to North America after all, and Gyokeres had almost single-handedly carried them there.
This is Sweden’s return to the World Cup after missing Qatar 2022, and they come back with an attack that most nations would envy. Gyokeres at Arsenal, Isak at Liverpool; two of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League starting together for the same international team. The concern is Isak’s fitness; he broke his fibula in December 2025 and missed five months of the season. Graham Potter has flagged getting Isak to peak fitness as the most important challenge of their preparation.
Sweden are drawn in Group F of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia. For all our World Cup 2026 predictions and analysis visit LeagueLane.
“We have a highly organized foundation, but we now possess the individual spark to hurt teams in open play.” – Graham Potter
Appearances: 13 | Best finish: Runners-up (1958) | Back after missing Qatar 2022
English · Appointed late 2025 · Former Brighton, Chelsea manager · First international management role
Graham Potter is one of the most tactically innovative managers in European football, with a reputation built at Brighton for creating well-organized, technically progressive teams that punch above their weight. He was appointed in late 2025 and has quickly transformed Sweden from a team that scraped through qualifying into one with genuine tactical identity and attacking ambition.
His greatest achievement has been convincing Gyokeres and Isak that playing together is possible and productive. The 4-3-3 he has introduced gives both forwards space to operate and creates the overloads that allow Sweden’s technically gifted midfielders to find them in dangerous positions. His emotional intelligence and ability to manage big personalities is exactly what a squad with two world-class strikers needs.
Formation: 4-3-3 (shifting to 3-2-4-1 in possession)
Potter’s 4-3-3 is fluid and possession-based, with one central midfielder dropping between the centre-backs in possession to create a back three and give the full-backs freedom to push forward. The two forwards operate on either side of a central striker, interchanging constantly to create confusion in opposition defensive lines.
Out of possession, Sweden drops into a structured mid-block; they do not chase the ball desperately but close off central passing lanes and force opponents wide. The physicality of the Swedish players makes this mid-block very difficult to break down, and the transition to attack is quick once they win the ball.
The key tactical question is how to get the best from both Gyokeres and Isak simultaneously. Potter has indicated they will play together but the exact roles will depend on the opponent. Against Tunisia in the opener, both are likely to start and Sweden’s attacking quality could be decisive. Against the Netherlands, the mid-block will take priority.
Striker · Arsenal · Age 28 | Sweden caps: 32 | International goals: 19 | Playoff hero
The man who carried Sweden to this World Cup and the player the entire tournament will be watching. Gyokeres at Arsenal scored 14 Premier League goals in his debut season after joining from Sporting CP for £55 million in summer 2025, but his contribution to Sweden at this tournament will be judged against what he did in the playoffs; a hat-trick against Ukraine and the 88th-minute winner against Poland. Four goals in two matches, with everything on the line. He has 19 goals in 32 appearances for Sweden and arrives at his first World Cup as one of the most feared strikers in world football. If Isak is not fully fit, Gyokeres carries Sweden’s entire attacking ambition on his shoulders.
Striker · Liverpool · Age 27 | Returns from fibula fracture suffered December 2025
The other half of one of the most exciting attacking partnerships at this tournament, though his fitness is the most important question surrounding Sweden’s entire campaign. Isak moved to Liverpool for £125 million in summer 2025 and then broke his fibula in December, missing five months of the season. He returned in late April and has started training with Sweden’s squad but Potter has been careful in his language; this is a player coming back from a serious injury who has played very limited football. When fit and in form, Isak is a world-class striker. The question is whether he can reach that level across three group stage matches in three weeks.
Centre-back · Aston Villa · Age 30 | Sweden caps: 75+
Sweden’s captain and the defensive leader who gives the entire squad its stability and direction. Lindelof at Aston Villa has had one of his best seasons in years; composed, commanding and a genuine presence in the back four. With 75 caps he is Sweden’s most experienced player and his reading of the game, aerial dominance and ability to organize the defensive line makes him the cornerstone of everything Potter has built at the back. Against the Netherlands’ movement and Japan’s pace in transition, Lindelof’s leadership will be tested from the first whistle.
Winger · Newcastle United · Age 23 | Sweden caps: 20+
The most exciting wide player in Sweden’s squad and the one who gives Potter’s system its pace and directness from the flanks. Elanga at Newcastle has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent wide players this season; direct, quick and capable of delivering crosses and creating chances from wide areas. With Kulusevski absent through injury, Elanga’s role becomes even more central to Sweden’s attacking plan. His energy and running gives Sweden width that forces opposition full-backs to stay deep, which in turn creates space for Gyokeres and Isak to operate in.
14 June 2026: Sweden vs Tunisia at Estadio BBVA, Monterrey
20 June 2026: Netherlands vs Sweden at NRG Stadium, Houston
25 June 2026: Japan vs Sweden at AT&T Stadium, Dallas
Sweden are the dark horses of Group F and genuine contenders to advance from the group stage. The Gyokeres and Isak partnership, if both are fit and firing, is the most potent strike combination outside of Brazil and France at this tournament.
The qualification story with just two points from six group games, then Gyokeres winning two playoff matches almost alone tells you everything about the character of this squad.
The betting angle is Gyokeres to score anytime in the group stage. He has been one of the most clinical strikers in Europe this season and arrives at the World Cup in the form of his career.
The Tunisia opener is the most important fixture; Sweden are clear favourites and a win there gives them momentum for the Netherlands match. Under 2.5 goals in the Netherlands vs Sweden match is also worth considering given both sides’ defensive quality.
The ceiling for this Sweden squad is the round of 16 and they have a realistic path to get there. If Isak reaches his best form in time, Sweden is capable of beating any team in Group F.
The Group F decider against Japan on June 25 could be one of the most important matches of the entire group stage.
