World Cup 2026 Group E Preview: Germany, Ecuador, Ivory Coast and Curacao

Ezekiel - June 2, 2026

Germany are the undisputed favourites of Group E and it would take a miracle for the remaining three teams to upset them. So, the real question is who will be in second place; both Ecuador and Ivory Coast have a genuine chance and neither is going to give it up easily. For all our World Cup 2026 predictions and analysis visit LeagueLane.

Germany’s last two World Cups are unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. Eliminated in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022, this is a tournament that a country with four titles does not take lightly. This squad is under immense pressure to put things right, and it finally has the talent to do so.

Ecuador don’t come with bells on but they come with seriousness. They are difficult to defeat, well-managed, and have players performing at the highest level in European football weekly. Ivory Coast are returning hungry after missing the World Cup since 2014. Then there is Curacao; the smallest country ever to reach a World Cup, who the world will be watching just to see what they do.

“Group E has a clear favourite. But between Ecuador and Ivory Coast, second place is far from settled.”

Team-by-Team Breakdown

Germany: Heavy Favourites

Germany are four-time World Cup winners. However, two consecutive group stage eliminations in 2018 and 2022 changed the perception of this team entirely. It was a lot of embarrassment for a country with that history, and the players know it. This team does not come with the sole purpose of winning matches. They are here to restore Germany’s name.

Florian Wirtz had a tough first season at Liverpool after his move from Bayer Leverkusen but pulling on that Germany shirt has always brought out the best in him. Jamal Musiala has returned from the broken leg he incurred during the Club World Cup last summer and is near his best according to Nagelsmann.

On their day, these two are a nightmare for any defence in the world. Joshua Kimmich is the leader and keeps everything going. There is genuine strength in the backline with Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah, while Manuel Neuer joined the squad as a late addition for this tournament.

The biggest concern is what happens when they lose the ball. They leave plenty of space for quick teams to exploit behind the full backs.

During the group stage it may not be a significant issue, but it could prove costly in the knockout rounds. The 2018 and 2022 exits were about more than a lack of talent. They were about a team falling apart under pressure. This generation has not been tested like that yet.

  • Strengths: Wirtz and Musiala together in attack · Kimmich and Neuer’s experienced leadership · Deep squad with options in every position · Motivated by two damaging early exits
  • Weaknesses: Space behind full-backs against quick teams · Two group stage exits left a scar on confidence · Musiala still building back from serious injury

Prediction: Germany top the group. Nagelsmann will want three wins to send a message to the rest of the tournament.

Ecuador – Value Pick

Ecuador finished second in South America’s World Cup qualifying, above Brazil and Uruguay. There is not a lot more to say about where this team is right now. They are not aesthetically pleasing to watch, but they work. They conceded only five goals in coach Sebastian Beccacece’s 18 qualifying matches. Defensive records like that do not just happen; they are proof that this backline is of genuine quality.

Willian Pacho at PSG and Piero Hincapie at Arsenal are two of the best young centre-backs in European football. Pervis Estupinan at AC Milan adds quality at left back. Moises Caicedo at Chelsea runs the midfield and keeps the team organised, while Enner Valencia, at 36 and Ecuador’s all-time top scorer, is still going and still their most dangerous player.

The question is whether they can score enough goals. They have an excellent defence with an underwhelming attack. Without a breakthrough from Valencia, and if Paez is not ready to operate at this level, scoring against rigid defences will be a challenge.

  • Strengths: One of the best organised defences in the tournament · Caicedo is world class in midfield · Extremely hard-working and difficult to beat · Superb qualifying campaign
  • Weaknesses: Too much reliance on 36-year-old Valencia for goals · Little creativity when defending deep · Never been past the round of 16

Prediction: Ecuador will fight hard for second place. Their defensive quality makes them difficult for anyone to beat, and they have every chance of edging through.

Ivory Coast – Dark Horse

Ivory Coast enjoyed one of the top performance stories in recent years by winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023 on home soil. They lost their title in the quarter-finals in 2025 and have not played in the World Cup since 2014. They return with a team that is more talented than their FIFA ranking suggests, and with a chip on their shoulder.

The squad announcement was not without its problems. Wilfried Zaha was not included; he simply was not the same player at MLS club Charlotte FC. Sebastien Haller, who scored the winner in the 2023 AFCON final, is also absent. Coach Emerse Fae has brought in a young and hungry forward line in their place; Amad Diallo of Manchester United, Ange-Yoan Bonny of Inter Milan who only recently chose Ivory Coast over France, and Nicolas Pepe, who has another opportunity to make something of his career at this stage.

The midfield is genuinely strong; Franck Kessie leads the group supported by Nottingham Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare. Ousmane Diomande at Sporting is one of the most highly rated young centre-backs in Europe. The issue is up front. Without Haller as a target man, it is unclear who leads the line, and that uncertainty could cost them points.

  • Strengths: Kessie, Sangare and Fofana in midfield · Amad Diallo and Bonny add pace and creativity · Diomande is a top-level young defender · 2023 AFCON winning mentality still present
  • Weaknesses: No genuine target man without Haller · Bonny and Wahi are very young under pressure · Ivory Coast have never advanced past the group stage at a World Cup

Prediction: Ivory Coast will run and run and run and push hard for a place in the knockout rounds. They have the best chance of producing a surprise on any given day compared to the other teams in the group.

Curacao – Wildcard

The population of Curacao is 180,000 people; the size of a medium-sized English city. They are the smallest nation by population ever to appear at a World Cup, and just making it is a story that deserves to be told regardless of what happens in Group E.

Their advantage is the FIFA ruling that allows players who represented the Netherlands at youth level to switch allegiance to Curacao. Tahith Chong, who came through the Manchester United Academy and now plays for Sheffield United, is their most exciting player. Captain Leandro Bacuna and his brother Juninho operate in midfield with real European experience. Armando Obispo at PSV Eindhoven is their highest-profile club player.

Their manager is Dick Advocaat, 78 years old and one of the most experienced coaches in the game, who remarkably came out of retirement to return to the job after Fred Rutten stepped down. Advocaat originally guided Curacao through qualifying before stepping aside for personal reasons; he has now come back for one final chapter. Curacao will sit deep and make things difficult, and if they remain patient against Ecuador or Ivory Coast, one well-executed counter-attack or set piece could produce something memorable.

  • Strengths: Defensively organised with clear Dutch identity · Tahith Chong’s pace and Premier League experience · Bacuna brothers provide leadership and experience · Advocaat’s vast international management experience
  • Weaknesses: Quality gap against all three opponents is significant · Manager change close to the tournament disrupted preparation · No World Cup tournament experience whatsoever

Prediction: Curacao are here to make their mark, and they will make Ecuador and Ivory Coast work far harder than expected. Whatever happens, they have already accomplished something extraordinary by qualifying.

Key Fixtures

14 June – Germany vs Curacao – NRG Stadium, Houston

Germany’s opener. The result is not really in question. What matters is how convincingly they win and whether Wirtz and Musiala click from the first minute.

14 June – Ivory Coast vs Ecuador – Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia

The most important game on opening day. Two teams fighting for second place going at each other straight away. A win here gives one a massive advantage. A draw keeps everything open.

20 June – Germany vs Ivory Coast – BMO Field, Toronto

Ivory Coast’s best chance to cause an upset. Their energy and pace in attack could test Germany’s defence in a way Curacao never could. Germany should still win but this will not be comfortable.

20 June – Ecuador vs Curacao – Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

Ecuador are expected to win this but Curacao will make them earn it. If Ecuador struggle to break down a compact defence, the pressure starts to build.

25 June – Ecuador vs Germany – MetLife Stadium, New Jersey

Could be the group decider. A fascinating tactical battle between Ecuador’s defensive structure and Germany’s pressing game. Ecuador will not be afraid of Germany.

25 June – Curacao vs Ivory Coast – Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia

Running simultaneously with Ecuador vs Germany. If Ivory Coast need a result to go through, the pressure is on against an opponent who will make them work for every inch. Curacao’s best chance at something memorable.

Author’s Verdict

Germany are the group winners; nobody should be surprised by that. There is simply too much talent in this squad for the other three teams, and Nagelsmann will want a clean sweep to set the tone for the knockout rounds.

Second place is genuinely up for grabs. Ecuador get a slight advantage based on their defensive record; Beccacece has created a team that is very tough to beat. However, Ivory Coast are capable of putting any side to the sword on their day, and if Amad Diallo and Bonny get off to a flying start it could come down to goal difference.

As for Curacao, they have already accomplished something great just by being here. They will make Ecuador and Ivory Coast work far harder than anticipated, and in tournament football that is no small thing.
