With Belgium looming over this group, both Iran and New Zealand understand that three points here could prove decisive in the race for qualification. It is a significant loss but Taremi, Jahanbakhsh and Mehdi Ghayedi provide enough quality to win this fixture. Iran set up in a 4-2-3-1 with a compact defensive block and rely on their organisation and counter-attacking pace. They have kept clean sheets in this system and New Zealand are unlikely to cause them many problems.

New Zealand’s Recent Form Is a Major Concern

New Zealand arrive in terrible shape. They lost 4-0 to Haiti, 2-0 to Ecuador, 2-0 to Finland and 1-0 to England in their last four matches, conceding nine goals. Their only positive result in recent months was a 4-1 win over Chile in March. The All Whites qualified through OFC — beating Tahiti, Vanuatu, Samoa, Fiji and New Caledonia — none of which prepare you for the step up to facing Iran at a World Cup.

Chris Wood is New Zealand’s all-time top scorer with 45 goals in 88 caps and provides a physical aerial presence. But he will be isolated against Iran’s disciplined backline and is unlikely to receive the service needed to hurt a well-organised defence. New Zealand will sit deep and look to frustrate, but Iran have the quality and patience to find a way through.

Iran to win to nil at 1.92 is the headline tip. New Zealand have conceded nine goals in their last four games against sides significantly weaker than Iran. Team Melli average just 0.38 goals conceded per game and their defensive structure is built for exactly this type of fixture. A clean sheet is more likely than not.

Mehdi Taremi to score anytime at 2.88 is the player pick. He is Iran’s captain, their designated penalty taker and the focal point of everything they do in attack. Against a New Zealand side giving away cheap goals, he is the obvious candidate to open the scoring.

New Zealand are unlikely to find a way through Iran’s defensive block, and Taremi’s record and Iran’s attacking quality suggest two goals across 90 minutes is a realistic and well-supported target. At 8.50 it represents strong value for a result that the form data firmly backs.
