The injury list has not helped. Rodrygo tore his ACL and meniscus in March and is out for the rest of 2026. Estevao suffered a serious hamstring injury in April and has also been left out of the squad. Both were likely starters under Ancelotti’s preferred system.

Neymar takes Estevao’s place in the squad, making a return to international football after more than two years out. His fitness remains the biggest unknown in the Brazil camp.

Vinicius Junior carries the weight of expectation and wears the No.10 shirt. He has never fully replicated his Real Madrid form for Brazil, scoring just eight goals in 47 appearances, but this tournament represents his clearest opportunity to change that narrative.

Raphinha arrives in career-best form following a remarkable season under Hansi Flick at Barcelona. Endrick, loaned to Lyon in January after being overlooked at Real Madrid, made 12 goal contributions in 17 Ligue 1 appearances and arrives full of confidence.

Morocco’s Fighting Spirit Should Keep Them Competitive

Morocco’s preparation for this tournament has been disrupted by a managerial change that few saw coming. Walid Regragui, the coach who led the Atlas Lions to the 2022 semi-finals, resigned in March 2026 just three months before kickoff.

Mohamed Ouahbi stepped up from the Under-20 side to take charge. He guided Morocco’s U20 side to World Cup glory in 2025, beating Argentina 2-0 in the final, but this is a different challenge entirely. Brazil at MetLife Stadium is as difficult a first senior assignment as any new coach could face.

Ouahbi has inherited a squad ranked eighth in the world and stocked with elite European talent. Hakimi remains the standout name, having contributed 11 goals and 14 assists for PSG last season as they won the Champions League, Ligue 1 and the French Cup. He was named CAF African Player of the Year and is the engine that drives Morocco’s attacking play from right-back.

Brahim Diaz and Bilal El Khannouss provide the creative spark in and around the penalty area, with Amrabat anchoring the midfield behind them.

The Atlas Lions conceded just 0.66 xG against Nigeria and 0.72 against Senegal at the AFCON semi-finals, which tells you how hard they are to break down. But their ability to score against a Brazil side that will dominate possession is the open question.

Previous Meetings

Brazil and Morocco have met just twice. Their only competitive encounter came at the 1998 World Cup when Brazil won 3-0 in the group stage. Morocco claimed their first ever win against the Selecao in a March 2023 friendly in Tangier, winning 2-1.

The head-to-head tells us very little given the nature of those two fixtures, but Morocco will draw confidence from that Tangier result.
