Belgium vs Portugal
Euro 2020 – Round of 16
Date: Sunday, 27 June 2021
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Estadio de La Cartuja.
Right away the Round of 16 has given fans a mouthwatering clash. The defending champions against the first-ranked team in the world.
Belgium are determined to deliver a title at any cost. They are in form, their key players are back from injury, and they are motivated. If unchecked, these guys could really go all the way.
However, Fernando Santos’s men might have a thing or two to say about that.
They have a habit of shattering dreams against all odds; case in point – when France were defeated in the final of Euro 2016 by these bunch of players, in France, and that too without Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese squad might have sneaked into the Round of 16 at the last moment, as one of the best third-placed teams. But they usually get better as the tournament progresses.
Experience is going to play a great role in determining the outcome of this game.
In spite of all the talent Belgium possess, their golden generation is yet to appear in the final of an international tournament.
The expectation is that – a fierce encounter is about to be unloaded in front of us, and this might probably be the best game of this round. Anticipate goals to come from either side of the pitch.
Belgium: Team News
Roberto Martinez had experimented a bit with his squad in the final group-stage game, as they had already ensured progression to the Round of 16.
However, this Sunday, he will pick his best eleven. They are here to win the title, and there will be no compromises.
That means we will most probably witness the deadly duo of Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard on action. Younger brother Thorgan will complement these two as well.
Belgium: Predicted Line-up (3-4-3)
Courtois – Alderweireld, Denayer, Vertonghen – Meunier, Tielemans, Dendoncker, Thorgan Hazard – De Bruyne, Lukaku, Eden Hazard.
Portugal: Team News
Great things were expected from Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandez at the Euros. But sadly he has been a shell of his former self lately. And this has totally affected Santos’s trust on him.
With such a pivotal game at hand, the expectation is that Bruno will be on the bench.
Meanwhile, striker Diogo Jota has been a little wasteful in front of the goal, but the gaffer does not have many options to replace him on short notice. Likely, expect him to start, but expect an early substitution if things do not go well.
Portugal: Predicted Line-up (4-3-3)
Patricio – Semedo, Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro – Moutinho, Danilo, Sanches – Silva, Ronaldo, Jota.
Belgium vs Portugal: Head-to-head (h2h)
- Six of the former ten encounters had goals from both teams.
- Three of the preceding four meetings had three or more goals.
- Portugal had won three of the last four clashes.
- Belgium last recorded a win against this opponent in 1989.
Belgium vs Portugal Prediction
Judging the plethora of talent Belgium possess, and the way they raced to the top in Group B, the expectation is that they are about to win this fixture against a tired and struggling Portugal.
However, it’s not a great idea to bet against the Navigators. Many a times, they have proved doubters wrong, and especially in times when their backs were against the wall.
As such, the one thing that could be said with some certainty about this game is – goals.
With such talented attackers on either side, and with both squads determined to go all the way – expect waves after waves of attack from either team all through the ninety minutes.
Moreover, in Romelu Lukaku, and Cristiano Ronaldo, we have two of the top-scorers of this tournament, and both are gunning for the golden boot.
With the kind of soft penalties the Euro has been handing out lately, it would be a wonder if we would not see at least one in this game. Expect a goal-fest this Sunday at the Estadio de La Cartuja.
