Wigan Athletic vs Sheffield Wednesday
English League Championship
Date: Saturday, 4th August 2018
Kick-off at 15:00 UK/ 16:00 CET
Venue: DW Stadium (Wigan).
Wigan stayed just 1 season in League one following their relegation from EFL Championship 2 seasons ago. Now the third tier English champions face Sheffield Wednesday in the opening round.
Latics managed to get the title in League 1 and the team was obviously good enough to do it. It wasn’t just a good stroke of luck. They played well in the majority of the season and in the end they took the fruits of their work. Now their main aim should be to stabilize themselves in the EFL Championship.
Wigan didn’t have the best of pre-season preparations so far. The Lancashire club played only 3 friendlies and produced 1 of each – victory, draw and loss. A victory over Tranmere Rovers was followed by a draw to Chesterfield and a heavy defeat against Scottish side Rangers.
Sheffield Wednesday were on the other side of emotion compared to Wigan. The Owls will want to forget the disappointing season as soon as possible and try to reach their goals this time around. The finished in disappointing 15th position after getting to the play-offs both previous years.
Jos Luhukay who took charge after Carlos Carvalhal was sacked didn’t improve the results and now will be hoping to make an impact in the fresh new season. Sheffield played 4 friendlies winning and losing 2 of them.

Wigan Athletic vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions
Wigan may have played offensively in League 1 but we doubt they will go for it in their opening fixture against a tough opponent. Sheffield despite the disappointing season showed that they are a sturdy side and did not concede too many goals. This game has the potential to go all the way down to a boring goalless draw with no real indication of which team may win it.
