Switzerland vs Iceland Predictions and Match Preview

Switzerland vs Iceland
UEFA Nations League
Date: Saturday, 8 September 2018
Kick-Off at 17:00 UK / 18:00 CET
Venue: Kybunpark, St. Gallen.

Switzerland host fellow World Cup contestant Iceland on the opening day of the UEFA Nations League campaign.

Teams are set to battle it out home and away alongside Belgium in the Group 2 and only the winner gets to advance to the semi-final.

Given the Red Devils are favourites to top it on paper, neither of these two likes should afford a defeat here.

The hosts managed to pass the group this summer in Russia. They held Brazil to a draw before beating Serbia 2-1 after a strong second-half display which secured them the comeback.

However, Vladimir Petkovic’s troops disappointed in the first knockout stage game, falling 1-0 to the super stern Sweden and failing to match their historical best result at World Cups (quarter-final).

Iceland, who enjoyed their debut at the tournament in Russia, took only a single point in three games there in spite of holding the likes of Argentina to a 1-1 draw in the first fixture.

Switzerland vs Iceland: Head-to-head

Switzerland have a brutal head to head record against Iceland (5 wins and 1 draw in 6 games).

The lone draw came in the previous H2H encounter played within the World Cup 2014 qualifications (4-4 on the Swiss soil).

La Nati bagged two or more goals in five of six meetings against Iceland.

Switzerland vs Iceland: Prediction

Neither of the two sides will see many changes to squads that featured the World Cup in Russia.

Striker Josip Drmic will not be there for La Nati, but Petkovic has genuine solutions in the likes of Admir Mehmedi (recovered from the injury), Haris Seferovic, Breel Embolo and Mario Gavranovic.

Stephan Lichtsteiner is still there as well as Xerdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka.

Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson will lead Iceland’s line which will be weakened without Alfredh Finnbogason.

The visitors revealed plenty of defensive holes in pre-World Cup friendlies as well as at the tournament itself.

They shipped two or more goals in six of last seven matches. This is why we’ll back Switzerland to win at 1.72 as the main betting option here.
