Steffen Schmidt - September 7, 2023
Stevenage vs Carlisle
English League One
Date: 9 September 2023, Saturday
Kick-off at 15:00 UK / 16:00 CET
Venue: The Lamex Stadium (Stevenage).
Stevenage host Carlisle in one of just two League One games on Saturday’s Gameweek No 7 schedule at The Lamex Stadium.
These two sides battled it out together in League Two football last season and here they are coming across each other in a higher-division action this time around.
Stevenage got off to a much better start. They are the joint-leaders with four wins in the opening six rounds, defying the odds and rushing towards successive promotions.
After winning the inaugural three games of the season, Stevenage failed to find the back of the net in consecutive league affairs against Reading (a 2-0 loss on the road) and Portsmouth (a 0-0 draw at home).
Nevertheless, they bounced back last weekend by bagging three unanswered goals past struggling Leyton Orient (another team that earned the third-tier promotion last season).
Carlisle, on the other side, managed their inaugural win in higher division seven days ago when they dispatched Shrewsbury 2-0 on the home patch.
Nevertheless, they have five defeats and one draw in the remaining six of the previous seven outings they played in all competitions.
The lack of efficiency in the final third is a big issue for head coach Paul Simpson whose team have failed to find the back of the net in three of the last four matches across competitions.
Interestingly, Carlisle have lost all four away games this season with an identical 1-0 scoreline.
Stevenage are very tough to break down at the start of the season while Carlisle have huge problems with the lack of attacking creativity. We will back the hosts to keep a clean sheet as the main pick at the odds of 2.25 odds.
Only one of the last five games Stevenage played saw three or more goals scored while all of Carlisle’s eight competitive outings across competitions this season finished with fewer than three goals scored. We will take the Under 2.5 goals FT bet at the 1.85 odds.
