Spain vs Croatia
UEFA Nations League
Date: Tuesday, 11 September 2018
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero (Elche).
Positive start for Spain in one of the toughest groups of UEFA nations League.
The 2-1 win against England is achieved after going down to an early goal from Marcus Rashford.
Saul and Rodrigo were the scorers for the La Furia Roja that ensured the team go into half-time break with a lead. Marcus Rashford scored the first for England.
The result also gave Luis Enrique a winning start to his tenure as Spanish national team’s head-coach.
Croatia, the World Cup runners-up, will be playing their first match in the competition.
They played a friendly against Portugal last week, ended in 1-1 draw.
Zlatko Dalic will have to do without the services of senior players Mario Mandzukic, Daniel Subasic and Vedran Corluka; all three players announcing the retirement after the event in Russia.
This Croatian squad lacks the stability upfront with the retirement of Mario Mandzukic and I can’t see a player who could come straight in to fit in those big shoes. However, the positives can be found in the skillful midfield and the scoring form of Ivan Perisic, who scored in the team’s last three matches.
Rodrigo will be the player to watch at the end of the pitch, the Valencia forward scored three goals in his last five starts for the national side. But we know, Spain is not a one man team of any sort and there is someone in the sidelines ready to step up if one of those regulars is having an off day.
Spain vs Croatia Head-to-head
- The teams locked horn on 5 occasions, Spain were unbeaten in the first 4 with 3 wins and a draw.
- Their most recent meeting was at the Euro 2016, Croatia came back from a goal down to win it 2-1 with Nikola Kalinic and Ivan Perisic getting their name on the score-sheet.
- This is the first time the teams are meeting in a qualifying contest.
Spain vs Croatia Prediction
Croatia might have had a good World Cup, but we can expect an entirely different kind of battle at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero.
Spain have scored in each of their last 25 matches across all competitions and boast of a lucrative 2.8 goals per game in the process.
The Vatreni haven’t done great in qualifying fixture off late, especially they are chasing shadows in fixture away from home.
This could easily go down as another Spanish victory and the Croats may find it hard to break down the home side’s disciplined defensive wall.
