Serbia vs Portugal
Euro 2020 Qualification
Date: Saturday, 07 September 2019
Kick off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Stadion Rajko Mitic (Belgrade).

We have seen every possible outcome in Serbia’s first three games in Qualifying Group B, and that puts them on 3rd position, levelled with Luxembourg and six points behind the leaders, Ukraine.

The Serbian ‘Eagles’ have started off with a positive 1-1 draw in Lisbon, but optimism didn’t last long as they suffered an embarrassing 0-5 defeat in L’viv. Despite the convincing 4-1 win over Lithuania in the third round, Mladen Krstajic got the sack and Ljubisa Tumbakovic, former Montenegro manager, took over.

After two draws at home vs Serbia and Ukraine (0-0), the reigning European Champions will take a road trip in September and visit Belgrade and Vilnius. They’re currently 4th in the standings, but there is no need to panic as they have two games in hand over Ukraine.

Fernando Santos has called up all the big guns in search of a double victory that would propel them to second place.

Serbia vs Portugal: Head to Head

  • This will be their sixth encounter and Portugal is topping the H2H with 2 wins and 3 draws.
  • Both teams have found the back of the net in all of their previous meetings.
  • Portugal won the latest outing in Belgrade (2-1)

Serbia vs Portugal: Prediction

Two very important players, Luka Milivojevic (Crystal Palace) and Matija Nastasic (Schalke) are back in the Serbia squad after more than a year out since they refused to play under Mladen Krstajic and both of them should be in the starting XI on Saturday. Ljubisa Tumbakovic has a decent players at his disposal, bar the options for the right back.

Portugal looked good in first two games, took 48 shots combined, but were unlucky not to pick up more points. That bad feeling didn’t stop them from getting another trophy, though, as they won the first edition of UEFA Nations League after beating Netherlands in the Final. I can see them winning this tie.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix and others should cause a lot of problems to the reunited pair of central defenders and leaky defence in general. A full-time score 2-1 again? Sounds plausible.
