Portugal vs Nigeria
International – Friendlies
Date: Thursday, 17 November 2022
Kick-off at 18:45 UK/ 19:45 CET
Venue: Estádio José Alvalade.

The Portuguese have high hopes coming into this World Cup. This is certainly the last fight for talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, and time is also running out for their golden generation. Meanwhile, the Nigerians will be low on confidence after failing to secure a ticket to the quadrennial extravaganza.

They did deliver some superb performances in the Qualifiers in the African federation, and almost made it happen. In fact, they topped Group C with ease, and scored the most number of goals there, as well as conceded the least.

However, in the two-legged playoffs, they were unable to deliver. In the first leg on the road, they registered a 0-0 draw, but the return leg ended in a 1-1 draw for them at home. And by the cruel away-goals rule, their wait got extended by four years.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese survived a scare. They were able to only secure a second-place finish in Group A in the World Cup Qualifiers. They had to finish below Serbia, as they lost at home in the final group-stage game.

However, in the playoffs, luck favored them. Favorites and Euro champions Italy crashed out against minnows North Macedonia, and Cristiano Ronaldo and co did not have to take on the Azzurri under extreme pressure.

Going on, this has been a season to forget for Ronaldo, and it is important for the confidence of the team, that their captain regain form. This is possibly one of the last chances for the team to play with relatively low pressure.

As these two lock horns this Thursday, expect a win for Portugal.

Portugal vs Nigeria Prediction & Analysis

After crashing out of the Nations League, the Portuguese are desperate to find form. And this is where an opponent like the Nigerians come to use.

Nigeria are low on confidence after messing up their trip to Qatar, and that too in possibly the worst way possible on the pitch – by losing on the away-goals rule.

Expect the Portuguese to make the most of this opportunity, and deliver a convincing win this Thursday. It is important for them that they land on Qatar with high spirits. Count on them to make light work of the Nigerians.
