Poland vs Portugal
UEFA Nations League
Date: Thursday, 11th October 2018
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Silesian Stadium (Chorzow).
Group Stage battles of the UEFA Nations League are back with a clash between a new look Portugal and Poland. The Group 3 match in League-A of the UNL will take place in Poland. The services of Cristiano Ronaldo are not available for the Iberian side that is 7th in the FIFA rankings at present.
The Selecao das Quinas have a young and inexperienced lineup up front. The likes of André Silva, Bernardo Silva and Bruma lack the sharpness in the final third that Ronaldo possesses. But they managed to conquer the Italians at their home in their first ever UEL match. The one goal from André Silva was enough to defeat the former World champions who are in the shadow of their former selves. The Portuguese defense lead by Pepe stood firm and the veteran Rui Patricio literally had not much to do in goal.
Bruma, who is the replacement for Ronaldo, had his moments in the game producing some blazing runs and shots. Coach Fernando Santos will be pleased by the performance of the full-back Joao Cancelo who was instrumental in organizing attacks from the right side. The 24 year is having a great season at Juve and is the considered one of the best young right-backs in the world.
Robert Lewandowski will have 100 caps for Poland when he faces the Euro champions on his home soil. The team managed by Jerzy Brzeczek will be looking to win the game for their star striker.
The Eagles held Italy draw in their last match in UNL. The Napoli Midfielder, Piotr Zielinski put Poland in front and Azzurri was saved by a penalty by Jorginho in the 78th minute. Polish failed to keep possession which was their major drawback against the Italians. It may be catastrophic to do the same against Portugal who has pace to burn up front.
The side captained by Lewandowski has won only 1 game in last 5 games. Meanwhile the team of the Five has won 2 in their last 5 games.
Poland vs Portugal Head to head
Poland won’t forget the shootout lose against Portugal in Euro 2016, where the team led by Ronaldo went on to win the trophy. Each team scored one goal each in normal time and extra time. The White and Reds lost the shootout 5-3.
In the last 11 meeting between these two sides, Portugal have 4 wins as against Poland’s 3 with another 4 resulting in stalemates.
The Poles are unbeaten in the last two home games against Portugal, a 0-0 stalemate in 2012 and 2-1 win in 2006.
Poland vs Portugal Predictions
Both teams have problems in scoring goals. The comparatively new players of Portugal will have a hard time converting their chances.
André Silva is in prime form for Sevilla in La Liga and if goals are going to be scored then he will be in the score sheet most probably. Bernardo will have the job of making chances in the Polish box. Cancelo and his crosses cannot be taken for granted.
Lewandowski will be aiming to repeat his goal scoring at Bayern and get a goal in his 100th match. Zielinski is not a go-to option in every game. So it might turn out to be a draw, with both teams scoring.
