Nacional vs Santa Clara
Portuguese Primeira Liga
Date: Sunday, 30 September 2018
Kick-Off at 16:00 UK / 17:00 CET
Venue: Estadio da Madeira (Funchal).
Nacional made it only a one-year loan in the second tier last year, clawing their way to the immediate promotion to Primeira. However, they’ll need to work hard to avoid the prompt return to Segunda, at least if we are to judge by a rather slow start to the season.
The hosts are led by the former Porto and Chelsea midfielder Costinha. The Portuguese manager has big issues with the lack of meticulousness in his team’s defensive efforts as Nacional allowed as many as 11 goals since the start of the season.
To make things worse, the hosts were toothless at the other end in most recent outings as well, failing to find the back of the net in last two games against Benfica and Feirense. Can such a poor run come to an end on Sunday afternoon when they meet Santa Clara at Estadio da Madeira?
Nacional vs Santa Clara: Head-to-head
These two teams battled it out together in the second class of Portuguese football last term.
Both of these ties ended in draws (1-1 and 3-3).
It is interesting to note that all of six head to head matches between these two likes saw goals at both ends.
Nacional were dominant in games in Funchal where they won two and drew one of three.
Nacional vs Santa Clara: Prediction
Santa Clara returned to the top flight after 15 long years this season. The manager Joao Henriques can be satisfied with how his team looks attackingly as they are averaging two goals per game after five rounds.
However, the defensive line has been anything but reliable allowing 11 goals so far. The team shipped two or more goals in all of last four league matches. The high-scoring head to head trend could thus likely be continued here in Funchal and backing goals at both ends seems to be just the way to go.
