Marseille vs Apollon Limassol
UEFA Europa League
Date: Thursday, 133 December 2018
Kick-Off at 17:55 UK / 18:55 CET
Venue: Orange Velodrome (Marseille).
Last term runners-up shockingly only claimed one point in five games in the new Europa League campaign. They thus won’t have the chance to go beyond the group stage regardless of the outcome of the final Matchday tie against Cypriot Apollon Limassol on Thursday evening at Velodrome.
The visitors have also lost all hopes of qualifying for the knockout phase, but they do sit three points clear off Marseille in fourth. A draw in France would help them avoid the rock-bottom of the group ladder, while Olympique’s win would allow the French outfit to overtake Cypriot rivals in third place.
Interestingly, the Phocians will be restricted to just six games in this Europa League campaign after they played as many as 18 last season.
Marseille vs Apollon Limassol: Head-to-head
The two sides played each other just once in the past.
Apollon managed to save a point thanks to a last-gasp equalizer from Emilio Zelaya in spite of the fact Marseille entered final 15 minutes of the game with a two-goal cushion.
The draw in Nicosia was actually the lone Europa League game which saw the Phocians avoid a defeat this term.
Marseille vs Apollon Limassol: Prediction
Things are not going very well for Marseille in their domestic campaign either. They took only one point from past two league games against Reims and Nantes to drop down to 5th in the Ligue 1 ladder. Rudi Garcia’s men have been very easy to break down ever since the start of the season.
They allowed as many as 13 goals in 5 Europa League affairs, while they shipped three in the previous Ligue 1 outing against Nantes away from home. Apollon did score seven goals in five games so far in the competition and we would certainly not be surprised to see them on the scoresheet on Thursday night at Velodrome.
