Lokomotiv Moscow vs Schalke
UEFA Champions League
Date: Wednesday, 3 October 2018
Kick-Off at 17:55 UK / 18:55 CET
Venue: RZD Arena (Moscow).
Lokomotiv Moscow were drawn from the pot one which suggested we might have at least one low-profile group without a true European giant in it. That was exactly the scenario as Loko, Schalke, Porto and Galatasaray will be battling it out for the top two spots in the Group D.
The top-seeded Russians are actually in the toughest position after the opening day. They produced a dismal performance allowing Galatasaray to cruise past them 3-0 in Istanbul two weeks ago. Anything but a victory against the German outfit here would seriously compromise Yury Semin’s men chances of advancing.
Lokomotiv Moscow vs Schalke: Head-to-head
This will be the first ever head to head encounter between Lokomotiv Moscow and Schalke.
Lokomotiv have a devastating record of five straight losses against the German opposition (Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart).
Schalke, on the other side, dispatched Krasnodar both home and away without conceding a single goal along in their lone meeting with teams from Russia.
Lokomotiv Moscow vs Schalke: Prediction
Schalke took a point from the first round when they drew 1-1 to Porto at VELTINS-Arena. Domenico Tedesco’s troops had the lead through Breel Embolo, but Otavinho made it all square from the spot to leave Die Koenigsblau with a mountain to climb to make it to the last 16 round.
Schalke made a dreadful start to the new Bundesliga campaign. They lost all of five opening games and were at the very foot of the ladder before this weekend when Alessandro Schopf’s goal against Mainz helped them gain the first three-pointer of the campaign.
Can Tedesco’s men build on such success and make it back-to-back wins by seeing off the struggling Lokomotiv Moscow? The hosts were also successful at the weekend beating Akhmat Grozny 2-0 at RZD Arena. However, the season has been anything but successful to them so far as Semin’s lads sit only 6th with 12 points from 9 games in the Premier League.
There is just no favourite here and the draw looks to be the most likable of three outcomes. We’ll alternatively back the Under 0.5 goals in the first half at 2.50 odds, expecting a super careful approach from both managers from the get go.
