Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Prediction & Match Preview

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich
UEFA Champions League
Date: Tuesday, 19th February 2019
Kick-off at 20.00 UK/ 21.00 CET
Venue: Anfield (Liverpool).

Mohammed Salah walking to the bench with tears strolling down his face, and Jurgen Klopp trying in vain to motivate his players, is still fresh in memory for the Reds. In the recent past, I really can’t think of a more unlucky club in European Football. Despite their admirable status, they have failed in winning several major trophies these last years, and agonizingly missed most of them between the cup and the lip.

Trust me on this. They will battle it out at the renowned Anfield.

The Bavarians have really walked into a trap that had been in the making for several years. After a long period of domination in the Bundesliga, Dortmund has eclipsed them in the league, and the team is giving a desperate chase to hold on to their beloved title. More than that, the core of the team that is past their prime has started to take its toll.

It’s common knowledge that Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are stars of yesteryears, and despite their high-profile performances every once in a while, it’s time they are replaced by young blood. That’s really where the English team has done well. Ever since the arrival of the eccentric but smart Klopp, their transfer season has been top notch.

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Head-to-head (h2h)

  • After their meetings in the 70s and 80s, either took a break from taking on each other. In the last 20 years, they have met just twice. Once in 2001, and then once more in 2017.
  • On both occasions, the team from England managed to win.
  • Both games had over 2.5 goals.
  • The Reds recorded three or more goals in either encounter.
  • Their latest meeting ended in a 0-3 win for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Prediction

The loss in the final of the last edition of the competition and their current form will drive the English team insanely for the win. The team took initiative and single-handedly has denied Pep Guardiola the chance to turn the Premier League into another ‘Bayern Liga’. The group of players are determined to gift their loyal fans something substantial this season and will take comfort and inspiration from the fact that their opponents are going through a period of decline.

They are no longer the top dog in the German first division and went winless in four of their last eight overall games, and three of their last away ties. They have consistently dropped points, and especially against teams with well-coordinated frontlines. And, it would be an understatement, if I say the Reds do have one.

The front-three of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Bobby Firminho has torn defenses down, and despite their slow start to the season, looks ready to reiterate the heroics of last season. The obvious home advantage they have got going on for themselves will also factor a lot into this game.

LFC has also been out of this world at this venue. Their only loss this season in front of their home crowd, was against Chelsea, in the EFL Cup. They doled out losses to the likes of Arsenal, eternal rivals Manchester United, PSG, Napoli etc, and that too with big margins.

I expect the hosts to grind out a win, and take the advantage for the return leg. The struggling defense of Die Roten, which has conceded in their last six ties in a row, and two or more goals in their last three away fixtures, will find it hard to shut out the charismatic and attractive gegenpressing style of football by Klopp, and will surely let their defense to be breached in the latter half, when the team is most vulnerable.
