Ivory Coast vs South Africa
Africa Cup of Nations
Date: Monday, 24 June 2019
Kick off at 15:30 UK/ 16:30 CET
Venue: Al Salam Stadium (Cairo).
Ivory Coast were handed a narrow yet shocking defeat when they squared up against Uganda in their final warm-up match in UAE and will be seeking the opportunity of redemption, right from the moment they land in Egypt for the much awaited African Cup of Nations.
The golden opportunity for the Elephants to go back to winning ways will be on Monday when they take on South Africa in their opening group fixture at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.
The latter saw out a goalless draw against Ghana in their previous friendly and will have their work cut for them if they do not improve on their game.
Ibrahim Kamara’s side had a dismal campaign in the Cup’s previous edition, despite finishing the year before as champions. The South Africans, on the other hand, have not been able to get their hands on the trophy since they last won it in 1996.
Out of the two sides, the Elephants look the more likely to be in for a better run this time and are serious contenders to progress past the group stage as table toppers.
Ivory Coast vs South Africa Head to head (h2h)
- The teams have met each other on three occasions.
- Their last encounter, in 2014, finished 2-0 in favor of South Africa.
- Ivory Coast are yet to register a win against the South Africans.
- Both the other fixtures ended in a draw at 1-1.
Ivory Coast vs South Africa Prediction
Stuart Baxter’s side looks likely to succumb to their first ever defeat to Ivory Coast when the teams clash with each other on Monday in their opening fixture of the African Cup of Nations.
Barring their recent loss to Uganda on the road, the Elephants have actually been putting on a very solid performance on the pitch. They have managed to win three out of their last four matches, and have picked up two clean sheets in the process as well.
In their defense, the starting eleven that featured in the recent loss was not in any way their strongest. Hence we can expect a much more capable and stronger line-up on Monday, which will definitely improve their chances of walking away with the win and the three points.
The South Africans have not managed to win a game in regulation time, in their last four fixtures. Their last two wins were a result of keeping their nerves better than their opponents after the matches went into penalty shoot outs after extra time.
We can definitely expect Ibrahim Kamara’s side to put daylight between them and their opponents before the break and surely grab the win at the end of the ninety minutes.
