The dessert of the first round in the EFL Championship features two familiar sides on Monday. Two sides that have faced each other both in the Premier League and in the second tier of English football – Hull and Aston Villa. Steve Bruce goes against one of his former clubs as Aston Villa prepares to launch another attempt to reach promotion.

Hull had a very disappointing season. The team not only failed to immediately return to the Premier League but also finished the season in the second half of the table.

Managerial changes along with some transfer activity and here are the Tigers fresh for the new season but with terrible results in the friendlies. Two victories in the first 2 preseason games were followed by 2 losses and 3 draws. Not the best preparation to be honest.

Aston Villa were having some turbulence. Changes in the club hierarchy and uncertain at some point managerial future marked their summer. Former Arsenal and French national team start Thierry Henry was heavily linked to their managerial role but so far Steve Bruce keeps his place.

Despite the earthquake on the higher levels the team on the ground played decently well in their games. Four pre-season victories coupled with 1 draw and 1 defeat showed that the team can and will fight for top places.

Hull City vs Aston Villa: Predictions

Hull have obviously financial troubles and their selection is limited. Villa on the other side are looking sharp and will try to start the season positively. They are the better side and they need to prove that.

Hull had troubles up front in the preseason and against all the experience and quality against Aston Villa at the back they will have even more trouble scoring.
