Chievo vs Juventus
2018/19 Italian Serie A.
Date: Saturday, 18 August 2018
Kick-Off: 17:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi (Verona).
The new Serie A season is finally upon us, and while those who have always followed Italian football are certainly excited, there will be also a whole wave of bandwagon fans jostling to crash the party.
They obviously won’t know the different between the Derby della Mole and the Derby della Madonnina, but that won’t matter. All they will care is about the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo as they prepare to sit down around their television sets and huddle over their computers and smartphones worldwide.
They were those who followed La Liga and Real Madrid primarily just because of the Portuguese superstar and now have suddenly developed an interest in calcio just because of his arrival in Italian football’s top flight last month.
Which suits Juventus just fine. The Bianconeri have already started to reap the rewards financially of spending over 100 million euros on his services as they desperately aim to fully establish themselves among Europe’s elite.
Juventus have been knocking on the door for the past few seasons, but have not been able to make that final leap, and the only way to really do it is to win the Champions League. That objective, of course, is a long way off, and first and foremost, defending the Serie A title will be the focus.
CR7 has already gotten off the mark, netting during Juve’s annual pre-season friendly against the junior side, which was more heavily attended than in recent times with many Italian-based Juve supporters looking for a chance to see their team’s new signing.
Not many, of course, who have followed their team for a long time along with their parents, could have expected that the man who helped knock Juve out of the Champions League could have joined this year, but that’s football.
Juventus will be looking to get off the mark, and Chievo will be looking to throw a monkey wrench into the euphoria that surrounds the reigning Serie A champions. The Flying Donkeys were hardly flying last season, but managed to again scrape by to avoid the drop as usual.
However, La Vecchia Signora won’t come into this game too casually as it was only a couple of seasons ago (in 2015) that Juventus infamously slipped up on matchday one, losing to Udinese on home turf in a rather bad start to their title defense.
Of course, it proved just to be a minor stumble, but obviously it’s not the way that Massimiliano Allegri will look to kick off proceedings this time around.
Chievo vs Juventus: Head-to-head (h2h)
- Juventus have won 11 of their last 12 meetings against Chievo across all competitions
- The Bianconeri have lost just one of their last 25 games in Serie A
- Juve have kept a clean sheet in six of their last eight meetings with Chievo across all competitions
- There have been under 2.5 goals in eight of Juve’s last 10 away games in Serie A
Chievo vs Juventus: Prediction
All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo, who is expected to make his full debut here, and the Portuguese ace could be deployed alongside Argentinian star Paulo Dybala. But other notable faces include Leonardo Bonucci, who has returned after leaving for AC Milan last year, and Gianluigi Buffon is no longer in between the posts.
Chievo have a lousy track record against Juve, to say the least, and a bad track record overall as we saw last season. Juventus are still fully getting their team meshed, but had a solid pre-season in the USA and should have no problems cruising to a very comfortable win here.
New signing Ronaldo looked quite impressive in his cameo and will be raring to get off the mark, and fans will be really excited to see how the five-time Ballon d’Or winner links up with the likes of attacking options like Dybala, Juan Cuadrado, and Douglas Costa up front.
