Brazil vs South Korea
World Cup 2022 Round of 16
Date: Monday, 5 December 2022
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Stadium 974 (Doha).
The Selecao bottled their perfect start to the World Cup campaign against Cameroon. Still, they progressed to the knockout round as group winner, thanks to the superior goal-difference with Switzerland.
Losing Neymar with injury did affect their performance in the final two group games however they continued to dominate possession. Finishing remains a major worry for Tite’s men as they netted just thrice while creating as many as 54 chances from those three games.
Brazil has a 100% win record against Asian teams at the World Cup, though all those games happened in the group phase. The most recent one is the 2-1 win against North Korea 2-1 2010, before 4-1 vs Japan in 2006 and 4-0 vs China in 2002.
Very few have expected South Korea to make it this far in the competition, especially after the defeat to Ghana.
Starting the final group game with just 1 point, the Taegeuk Warriors joined Japan and Australia in the underdogs club with a brilliant 2-1 win over tournament favorites Portugal.
Going back 20 years, they achieved their best and finished fourth in this competition when they were joint hosts with Japan.
A star studded Italy that had the likes of Del Pierro, Totti, Maldini etc and a highly talented Spain fell to them in the knockout rounds before Germany ended the run with a narrow 1-0 win.
While there is no doubt that the Koreans have a history of troubling top teams in the competition, we remain to see if they can create the biggest upset in this year’s World Cup.
Brazil vs South Korea Head-to-head
- Brazil won 4 of the 5 overall head-to-head meetings against South Korea while losing once.
- The teams met in June this year and the Selecao thrashed the Taegeuk Warriors 5-1.
Brazil vs South Korea Predictions
Brazil have been impressive in the final third in each of their three group games and their winning margin could have been wide if not for some brilliant saves from the opposition goalkeepers. We are expecting some luck in this aspect when they take the field against South Korea on Monday and take a shot at Selecao to score 3 or more goals in the match.
Richarlison, Vinicius and Raphinha were a constant threat in the final third in the first two games before resting in the 1-0 defeat to Cameroon. Each of them are strong candidates to net anytime at the Stadium 974 in Doha, but we are backing the Barcelona striker to score in this match, who was guilty of squandering some good chances in the group phase.
