Benfica vs Ajax Prediction & Match Preview

Benfica vs Ajax
UEFA Champions League
Date: Wednesday, 7 November 2018
Kick-Off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Estadio da Luz (Lisbon).

Benfica will be catching their last train on Wednesday evening when they reconvene Ajax in the fourth round. The Portuguese hopefuls left Amsterdam empty-handed after conceding a last-gasp 92nd-minute goal from Ajax’s right-back Noussair Mazraoui sent the deflected ball past Odisseas Vlachodimos’ back to leave the stands in raptures.

Ajax are now level at seven points with Bayern Munich at the top of the Group E ladder and they need a point here to make an enormous step towards the knockout stage being four points clear off Benfica in third.

Mazraoui thus once again proved to be Ajax’s hero after he bagged the leveller against Bayern Munich in the second round clash at Allianz Arena.

Benfica vs Ajax: Head-to-head

The two teams will take on each other for the fourth time ever on Wednesday evening.

The match played two weeks ago at Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam was their first official encounter though.

Teams snatched a single win apiece in friendlies played back in 2009 and 2014.

Benfica vs Ajax: Prediction

Ajax will come into the game in incomparably higher spirits. They made it six wins on the spin in all competitions beating Willem II 2-0 at the weekend. Kasper Dolberg and Frenkie de Jong notched two early first-half goals to open up the way for a comfortable home victory for Ajax who kept ground of defending champions PSV at the top of the Eredivisie standings.

The story is completely opposite with Benfica who shockingly fell 1-3 at home to Moreirense. It was their second straight league loss which caused the drop to the fourth position in the Primeira Liga ladder. If we count the aforementioned defeat to Ajax, the Eagles lost three consecutive games in all competitions.

Benfica failed to score more than once in last three matches. Knowing that Ajax kept their net untouched in eight of last nine affairs in all competitions, we do fancy the visitors to keep a clean sheet at 3.75 odds here. The more conservative punters will fancy Ajax not to lose at 1.55.
