Arsenal vs Rennes
UEFA Europa League
Date: Thursday, 14th March 2019
Kick-off at 20.00 UK/ 21.00 CET
Venue: Emirates Stadium (London).
The Gunners suffered a shock defeat against Rennes in the first leg of this tie. Now, they are supposed to turn around a two-goal deficit, at home, against a team that breached their defense thrice, just a week back.
But Unai Emery’s men received a lift in morale from an unexpected source. Just the last match-day, they hosted the newly revamped Manchester United, who were coursing unbeaten in the league since the new manager took over. Manchester also had turned around their 2-0 home loss against PSG, and at Paris.
But with some beautiful passing, and cohesive play, Arsenal put an end to the Red Devils’ mesmerizing run, and possibly took huge stretches in their journey towards the top-four spots. For sure, Rennes won’t be facing the timid Gunners they faced a week ago.
The French outfit may have recorded a surprise win over their English foes. But the away record of Rennes is a cause for concern, and with Arsenal peculiarly strong at home, it opens us to one of the most awaited games of this week.
Can Arsenal turn it around? We’ll see.
Arsenal vs Rennes Head-to-head (h2h)
- In the last decade, these two teams have met only once, which was the just-concluded first leg of this tie.
- Rennes recorded a 3-1 win, with the help of a penalty, an own-goal, and an extra player.
- Arsenal had found the back of the net in the fourth minute of the game itself but went on to lose the tie.
Arsenal vs Rennes Prediction
If the version of Arsenal that lined up against Manchester United this Sunday decides to drop in once more, it’s game over for Rennes. Such was the domination of the Gunners, against a much better side than French visitors.
Moreover, Unai Emery is kind of specialized in lifting the Europa League trophy, winning it thrice in a row, during his tenure with Sevilla. As a result, this pressure is easily manageable by him.
Importantly, at this venue, Arsenal has won their last five games in a row, and with a combined scoreline of 14-2. Also, they won 11 of their last 13 home ties, and 18 of their last 23. They were also unbeaten in 21 of their last 23 home fixtures.
Furthermore, the team managed to score in 24 of their last 27 home games and did it twice or more in eight of their last nine. Meanwhile, Rennes lost four of their last seven games on the road and conceded two or more in four of these seven as well.
The win in the first leg was definitely a fluke owing to the sending off, the own goal and the penalty. Arsenal will not repeat those mistakes and will be keen to progress to the next round. Expect them to show up with grit, and expect the visitors to fumble under this massive pressure.
It will be a spectacle, and the Gunners will overturn the tie.
