Algeria vs Kenya
Africa Cup of Nations
Date: Sunday, 23rd June 2019
Kick off at 21:00 UK/ 22:00 CET
Venue: 30 June Stadium (Cairo).
The Algerians are certain to be the most optimistic, of the two sides, having won their recent fixture against Mali after equalizing twice and finally taking the lead in the last ten minutes of regulation time.
Their opponents on Sunday, Kenya, who last played in the African Cup of Nations way back in 2004, were held to a 1-1 draw in their final friendly against DR Congo. They will need to up their game quite a bit if they intend on kick-starting their long-awaited campaign with a victory.
Djamel Belmadi’s men certainly left it late to take the lead in their own previous match, which ended 3-2 in their favor, at the last blast of the referee’s whistle. His side will not be taking any chances in the opening match of the Cup though and will be eying the three points that would potentially take them to the helm of the group.
Following the fixture on Sunday, Algeria will square up against Senegal while Kenya will lock horns with Tanzania.
Algeria vs Kenya Head to head (h2h)
- The only two previous fixtures between the two teams took place way back in 1996.
- The tie was carried out on two legs, and was a preliminary qualifier to the 1998 World Cup.
- Kenya won the first match at their home, by three goals to one.
- The away leg ended 1-0 to Algeria, albeit Kenya won the tie on aggregate.
Algeria vs Kenya Predictions
The four-time African Cup of Nations champions Algeria are most likely to taste victory in the opening fixture on Sunday against the Harambee Stars.
Despite the latter showing promise by keeping a clean sheet in the stalemate with DR Congo and managing a narrow win against Madagascar, in their most recent friendlies, Sebastien Migne’s men just do not look like a convincing side that can clinch the win against the Algerians.
The run of form for Djamel Belmadi’s side has been a lot more solid and consistent, in comparison with their counterparts. They have not tasted defeat in any of their last five matches and are more than likely to keep their streak intact on Sunday.
The Harambee Stars, who have never won the African Cup of Nations, will be in for a very tough clash and are unlikely to get their name on the score sheet. The Algerians are certain to take the win and the three points by a goal or two at the most.
