Die Wölfe are out for blood, aiming to maintain their good run of form when they welcome relegation threatened FSV Mainz to Volkswagen Arena in Sunday’s Bundesliga clash.
Wolfsburg vs Mainz Match Preview
The Wolves huff and puff but it was the defensive-minded Malmö FF who got the first blood though Wolfsburg ultimately came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Swedes in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 32 clash.
Oliver Glasner’s men has beaten Hoffenheim in a thrilling encounter last Saturday, making that their third unbeaten Bundesliga game in a row as Die Wölfe are back in the race for another fall in continental competitions; they have teams above them to thank for this opportunity as they continually dropped points just as Wolfsburg came out of their terrible run and sitting at 9th, Europa League is just five points away.
Wolfsburg were unbeaten at home for a long time, nearly three months, before their collapse as November rolled in but they were drawing a lot more than they’ve won, a trend which seems to continue; in the last three league games at Volkswagen Arena, the Wolves has drawn twice while losing to Hertha BSC, waiting for a win since December 15th and their fluke victory against Monchengladbach.
Last Sunday, the time had finally come. 1. FSV Mainz 05 (despite being more dangerous of the two, with Robin Quaison hitting a crossbar at one point) finally drew a game and shared the evening’s spoils with Schalke 04 in a exciting game, with lots of chances but with no ending product on either side.
The 05ers have made a nice, little cushion over other relegation contenders but it’s far too early to announce their Bundesliga survival; currently at 15th, FSV Mainz is five points away from first team below the line, Fortuna, with an opportunity to expand on that lead during the next couple of games where they’ll face two out of three relegation stragglers.
On the road, Die Nullfünfer have managed four wins and seven defeats, effectively collecting more points at travels than they’re in front of their own fans; the latest excursion was very fruitful for 05ers as they snatched all points from Berlin, led by Robin Quaison, Mainz’s hat-trick hero.
Wolfsburg’s Maximilian Arnold and Marin Pongračić have another game or two to sit out due their suspensions; William, Niklas Klinger and Ignacio Camacho are still out injured but Josuha Guilavogui is finally expected to make a comeback to the side after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
There’s some conflicting reports coming in for FSV Mainz but it is almost certain Alexander Hack and Stefan Bell are missing out on a Wolfsburg trip while Robin Quaison, Jerry St. Juste and Jeffrey Bruma will most likely play on Sunday.

Wolfsburg vs Mainz Prediction
I’m still waiting on Wolfsburg to prove me wrong and play one exciting, goals-filled game at their home ground. And while I raised the bar from usual Under 3 goals, that’s mostly a precaution since Mainz has been going gung-ho during their travels recently.
But I honestly expect from Wolves to continue being Wolves and bore their fans to death on yet another Bundesliga weekend.
With that in mind, adding Wolves midweek Europa League adventure, I can see them being extra careful. And with Mainz switching to back three in last few games… I don’t know, I don’t see this ending any other than in 0-0 or (God forbid) 1-1 draw.
