The River Islanders awaits Borussia Dortmund, fresh of their Champions League heroics, like lambs to the slaughter in Saturday’s Bundesliga clash.
Werder Bremen vs Borussia Dortmund: Match Preview
Wobbly Werder were handed a 3-0 defeat by RB Leipzig in last Saturday’s Bundesliga clash, in a match riddled with defensive errors and terrible decision making by the boys in green and to make matters worse, Bremen were also dealt with a huge injury blow as their winter signing Kevin Vogt had to come out just as the second half rolled in.
Nothing seems to go right for Bundesliga’s sleeping giant as Werder have got their fourth consecutive league defeat with their chances of survival slowly slipping away; currently at 17th, tied with Fortuna (who’s on relegation play offs places) and five points behind first team above the line, Mainz, who’s apparently catching on some form of late.
Terrible performances at Weser-Stadion are one of the reasons why the Green-Whites are in this mess; having won just five points in front of their own fans since the league started, Florian Kohfeldt’s men rank dead bottom, with no competition, when it comes to points won at home.
Norway’s new superstar and Dortmund’s latest jewel Erling Haaland scored twice as Borussia Dortmund produced an outstanding performance in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Paris St. Germain to claim a monumental 2-1 victory before their return fixture back in Paris two weeks down the line.
Back on the home front, Borussia recovered rather well following narrow loss in an exhilarating showdown against Leverkusen by trashing the holy hell off the rising Frankfurt’s Eagles which got them back on third place, tied with Monchengladbach and four points away from Bayern at the top.
Favre’s kindergarten had their fair share of mishaps during excursions across Germany as dropped victory against Bayer 04 is just one of the quite few the Black&Yellows racked up; four wins and three draws from eleven games on the road might be decent enough for a midtable side but title challengers Die Borussen claims to be must do better.
Maximilian Eggestein will be on the stands for Borussia clash due to suspension and he’ll have quite a company joining him in there: with already mentioned Vogt, Kohfeldt also won’t be able to use Sebastian Langkamp, Philipp Bargfrede, Michael Lang, Ludwig Augustinsson, Niclas Füllkrug and Kevin Möhwald, all residents of Werder’s emergency room.
Only one 100% MIA for Borussia Dortmund is Marco Reus, who’ll be out for approximately less than month while Julian Brandt and Thomas Delaney are still waiting for doctor’s approval before getting on a bus for Bremen.
Werder Bremen vs Borussia Dortmund: Head-to-head (h2h)
Overall Stats (106 games): Werder Bremen 43 wins, 19 draws, Borussia Dortmund 44 wins.
Werder have 31-9-11 record at home versus the Black & Yellows.
The River Islanders showed their teeth to Dortmund, surviving to claim a point last time the two met in the league and knocking them out of the Pokal just few weeks ago.
Surprise, surprise, Werder is on a four-game unbeaten streak versus Borussia Dortmund.
Both of these have trouble keeping the ball outta net; Werder failed to do so last twenty times they played Dortmund, who conceded at least a goal last fourteen times they’ve met Bremen.
Both sides have scored in their last ten showdowns.
Their last five encounters ended with more than 2.5 goals scored.
Werder Bremen vs Borussia Dortmund: Prediction
Shockingly enough, Borussia’s win at Bremen doesn’t pay well enough even though the Werderaner are often proven a tough pill to swallow for Black & Yellows from Dortmund.
So we’ll go with goals; knowing clashes between these two don’t lack them. Since the New Year, Favre’s pupils have scored five or more goals on multiple occasions, all but one, to be precise.
While it’s risky to chase this margin so close to their CL clash, their squad depth, quality and lack of it among Werder’s lines is why I think it’s worth a chase.
Two or more goals after the break make perfect sense for anyone who watched a handful of Werder’s games in recent months.
It won’t surprise anybody to see the Green-Whites hold their own in the first half, maybe conceding an unlucky goal during the closing moments only to completely fall apart following an hour’s mark.
