Villarreal vs Real Sociedad
Spain – La Liga
Date: Saturday, 18 August 2018
Kick-Off at 19:15 UK / 20:15 CET
Venue: Estadio de la Ceramica, Villarreal.

Villarreal host Real Sociedad in one of the most interesting clashes of the opening round in Primera Division.

The hosts enter the new campaign it a brand new pair of attackers in the likes of Karl Toko Ekambi and Gerard Moreno who have both enjoyed a scintillating form for their respective sides Angers SCO and Espanyol last season.

Furthermore, both players continued such spell of form this summer and they are expected to lead Villarreal’s line in the first game of the season at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Toko Ekambi notched a brace in 2-3 victory over Werder seven days ago, while Moreno bagged goals in back-to-back outings against Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-1 loss) and real Zaragoza (1-1 draw).

The most notable change at Sociedad was the one on the bench as Asier Garitano (previously spent five years in charge of Leganes) took charge in May this year.

Villarreal vs Real Sociedad: Head-to-head

  • Villarreal lead the head to head tie by seven wins coming into the 38th meeting with Sociedad.
  • The Yellow Submarine won 8, drew 6 and lost 4 of 18 home games against the Basques.
  • Last term meetings saw both teams snatching comprehensive victories in home games.

Villarreal vs Real Sociedad: Prediction

Sociedad entered last season with huge ambitions only to finish 12th after a rollercoaster La Liga campaign.

Their biggest issue was keeping things tight at the back as the attacking talent was always there with the likes of Willian Jose, Mikel Oyarzabal and Aggiretxe.

It will be interesting to see if Asier Garitano will manage to improve the defensive segment. He did a terrific job on this field with Leganes who were a very tough nut to crack for most Primera Division teams last year.

Sociedad played the pre-season schedule much tighter than we were used to from them. They did not concede loads, but netting two goals in four friendlies is certainly something their fans can’t be satisfied with ahead of the trip to Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal won 11 of 19 home games in the league last year and we have to see them as favourites against an outfit which lost four and drew one of last five off-season friendlies.

Moreno was quite inspired in previous tests and he is worth backing to find the back of the net on the official Villarreal debut at 2.00 odds.
