Villarreal vs Girona
Spain – La Liga
Date: Friday, 31 August 2018
Kick-Off at 21:00 UK / 22:00 CET
Venue: Estadio de la Ceramica, Villarreal.
The Yellow Submarine ma aged to fix the impression after a rather poor kick off to the new La Liga campaign and a 1-2 home defeat to Real Sociedad on the opening Matchday.
They held on to a goalless draw against Sevilla away at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan last time out and they are ready to clinch the maiden victory of the season on Friday evening when Girona come to visit Estadio de la Ceramica.
The visitors were one of the most pleasant surprises of the previous Primera Division term, but they will clearly face hard times saving the top flight status without Pablo Machin to guide them.
The new manager is Eusebio Sacristian, a man who had a dismal campaign with Real Sociedad last term.
He took one point from the opening two games at Estadi Municipal der Montilivi where Blanquivermell drew 0-0 to recently promoted Real Valladolid before suffering a 1-4 disaster against Real Madrid last Sunday.
Villarreal vs Girona: Head-to-head
Teams picked up a win apiece in the previous term of La Liga. Interestingly, both victories came on the road.
Overall, the H2H record is level at two wins apiece coming into the fifth head to head encounter between the two likes.
Villarreal vs Girona: Prediction
Villarreal made a host of changes to their squad in between two seasons, but we must admit they possess a very intriguing attacking pair in the likes of Karl Toko-Ekambi and Gerard Moreno, both of whom arrived at Estadio de la Ceramica this summer.
Girona’s defensive line revealed plenty of vulnerabilities against Real Madrid last time out and we can hardly see them keeping things tight at the back against the strong Villarreal side on the evening.
Moving forward, Blanquivermell conceded as many as 37 goals in 19 away fixtures in the previous term of La Liga which was only the second worst defensive record in the entire competition on travels.
Gerard Moreno should thus have plenty of space to deliver up front on Friday. The former Espanyol talisman was already on target on the opening day against Real Sociedad and we’ll back him as the anytime goalscorer here at the 1.90 odds.
