The Blues have struggled to score on a consistent basis all season, but might have changed since Jose Mourinho left the club as Chelsea scored 5 goals in the last two matches.
The tally stood which stood at 18 goals in 16 matches during Jose Mourinho’s tenure has improvement slightly, but there is much to do in the second half of the season.
With the appointment of Guss Hiddink as the interim manager of Chelsea, Roman Abramovich is expected to back the Dutchman with sufficient financial support in the Winter Transfer market.
The highest goal scorer of the team is Diego Costa who scored 5 goals in 15 appearances which spread around 1271 minutes on the football field. This is the same striker who was instrumental in Blues’ title winning campaign.
In a squad with inadequate cover and depth, Costa finds himself week in week out in the team sheet after being a ghost of himself in the current campaign.
This is the area Chelsea must improve ahead of the second half of the season, since they still have a chance to finish inside top four at the end of the season. Under current circumstances, this will be a great achievement and to do so they should get the right player who can test goal keepers on a consistent basis.
Here is our list of the probable targets the Blues must look at ahead of the transfer window.
1. Romeu Lukaku
Only 22-year old at the moment and it seems like Lukaku has been in the Premier League forever. The Chelsea prodigy was never trusted by Jose Mourinho during his tenure at the club even after netting 17 goals in Premier League while on loan at West Bromwich Albion. The subsequent season, he hit 15 goals for Everton and eventually let the brightest talent move to Goodison Park for a meagre £28 million transfer fee.
And in the current season, Lukaku has been a revelation for Roberto Martinez’s side and now he has gone scoring in eight consecutive games taking his tally to 13 goals in 17 appearances. Just after the sack of the Portuguese manages, club legend Didier Drogba said to have asked Chelsea board to consider re-signing the Belgian.
Just like what he did with Kevin De Bruyne, the sale of Lukaku must go into the book as one of the biggest blunders of Jose Mourinho.
But now, the times have changes and Everton are not keen on selling their best youngsters and also Chelsea are not the only club who wants the 22-year old. It has been speculated that Manchester United who are also interested in the player, also slight hints on interests from La Liga giants.
Even though, they may be able to tempt Everton by a £60m bid.
