Demons from the past haunts FC Utrecht as they welcome Lech Poznan for the third round of Europa League qualification campaign.
Utrecht are aiming for Europa League group stage appearance for the first time since 2010-11. However, they had made it to the qualifiers on one previous occasion since then, in 2013/4 and were eliminated by a lower ranker side FC Differdange from Luxembourg.
The Dutch defeated FC Valletta from Malta in the second round of qualifiers this term, 3-1 win at home in the second leg after the away leg finished in a goal-less stalemate.
Lech Poznan made a confident start to their Europa League qualification campaign. They scored 11 goals from the four matches, won 3 and lost 1. The only match in which they conceded goal was in the 3-2 away defeat to Norwegian side Haugesund.
Lech are looking for back-to-back Europa League group stage appearances and third in total since the new format came into existence. Last season, they started off by defeating Hungarian outfit Videoton FC in the play-off. The team failed to progress from the group, managing just 1 win from the 6 matches.
The Poles are unbeaten in 11 Europa League qualification fixture and have a record of 10 wins and 1 draw. However, they have a poor away record with 3 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats from 11 games.
Utrecht vs Lech Poznan: Head-to-head
This will be the first competitive meeting between the two sides.
Utrect’s previous meeting with a Polish side ended in a pair of defeats. In 2002/03 UEFA Cup first round, Legia Warsaw defeated them 7-2 on aggregate, 1-3 at home and 1-4 in Poland.
Lech Poznan tasted victory in their lone meeting with a Dutch club. Feyenoord were beaten 1-0 at Netherlands in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage.
Utrecht vs Lech Poznan: Prediction
Judging by the way Utrecht had played against a lowly ranked Valletta, they are in for trouble against a free scoring Lech Poznan. The Poles have a poor away record in the competition, therefore it is better to avoid betting on full-time result. The bets from goal markets are the better option as these sides can goal scores at will and their defensive is vulnerable.
