Union Berlin vs Wolfsburg, 1 March 2020, Sunday
Kick-off at 12:30 UK / 13:30 CET

The Wolves, high on spirit following Europa League heroics, travel to Berlin full of hope of maintaining their unbeaten run when they face this season’s Bundesliga revelation on Saturday afternoon.
FC Union Berlin vs Wolfsburg Match Preview
The Iron Ones picked up all three points at Eintracht Frankfurt with a 2-1 victory against the Europa League contenders led by Sebastian Andersson whose 9th goal of the season put Union ahead before an own goal from Evan N’Dicka sealed the Eagles’ fate.
It was third victory from last five games for Urs Fischer and his men as their uprising continue; comfortably sitting at 10th step of Bundesliga ladder (season high for the Iron Ones), continental football might be a big ask of the Berliners though I’m sure they don’t mind, their goal is in sight, survival and consolidation in the top flight.
Union is at their best in front of their own fans as they’ve managed a nice, little four-game winning streak at An der Alten Försterei, running from October through middle of December, abruptly interrupted by Hoffenheim; victory over Augsburg brought them back on winning track with Leverkusen raining on their parade during latest outing in Berlin after a 90th minute winner by Bellarabi.
On Thursday night, the Wolves run rampant through Sweden as Oliver Glasner’s men pulled a complete performance, rock-solid at the back, clinical going forward and they’ve deservedly sealed their place in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 with a 3-0 win at Malmö FF.
Back on the home front, Wolfsburg’s having a nearly perfect February as they’ve picked up ten out of maximum twelve points which resulted in them shooting up to 7th on the table, with Europa League places within a hand’s reach as struggling Schalke 04 remain just two clicks away.
Die Wölfe ranks among the better Bundesliga sides away from home though their unpredictability can be an issue; during the first half of the season, they were pretty conservative on the side, playing not to lose most of the time but recently we’re seeing braver, unchained Wolfsburg who doesn’t hold back which lead them to loss at Cologne but also to latest two spectacular triumphs over Paderborn and Hoff.
Alright, medical news… Joshua Mees, Laurenz Dehl and Akaki Gogia are still sidelined for the Berliners, with everyone else available albeit few players aren’t really at 100%. On the opposing end, William and Ignacio Camacho are still out, with Marin Pongračić joining them on the stands as he have one more game to sit out due to suspension.
Union Berlin vs Wolfsburg: Head-to-head (h2h)
- Sunday’s clash will make for their second official duel.
- The Wolves scraped past the Iron Ones last times the two met, getting away with 1-0 win in front of their own fans.
Union Berlin vs Wolfsburg: Prediction
Statistically speaking, both Union at home and the Wolves during their travels are more often than not more reserved. Careful and vigilant during the first 45 minutes, having a standoff then losing all the breaks after the restart and due to lack of data from previous duels between the two (one Bundesliga game and couple of friendlies aside).
I think this is the safest option going into this fixture; Wolfsburg had a midweek game for second week in a row, they won’t be raring to go from the start and Union being Union, they’ll wait for their chance.
And yeah, whilst Union at home had some spectacular scalps, including Dortmund and Monchengladbach, Wolfsburg are a team who’s pretty much invincible when they’re on a roll.
After all, they were unbeaten in the league until November and loss to Borussia Dortmund, when their confidence was shot to death but the Wolves got back their mojo, currently riding a wave of goodwill which I think will be enough for them not to lose in the capital.
