Udinese vs Lazio
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Saturday, 1 October 2016
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: Dacia Arena (Udinese).
Lazio could move into the top three with a win this Saturday, but Udinese will have other ideas as the Zebrette aim to arrest their own downward spiral.
At the start of matchday seven, things are pretty congested in the Serie A table. That’s not surprising as it is still pretty early in the season, with less than 20 percent of games played. As such, a win could see a side vault several places up, whilst a loss could see them tumbling the same several notches down.
Since the decline and eventual departure of Antonio Di Natale, Udinese have lost much of that same verve that helped them to hold their own against the “bigger” sides in Italy. It was not too long ago that the Zebrette were regularly challenging for a Champions League spot, but it must seem like a lifetime ago if one is an Udinese fan.
And it is shaping up to be a pretty rough season for the club. A 4-0 humiliating opening loss was mitigated by two wins over Empoli and AC Milan. However, the joy was short-lived as they lost to Chievo, picked up an (albeit) impressive point against Fiorentina, and were on the wrong side of a 1-0 score-line versus Sassuolo.
As such, Udinese fans really do not know what to expect from the team this season. It could be one they battle to stay afloat. It could be one that they eventually get the wheels back on track and end up somewhere in mid-table safety. Meanwhile, as Udinese hope to avoid finding themselves in a relegation battle, Lazio are seeking to get back into European competition for next season.
The Biancocelesti have played some good football, but Simone Inzaghi’s men are prone to bouts of inconsistency – especially on the road. Although they edged out Atalanta in a seven goal thriller, they were frustrated by Chievo and ended up losing to Milan at the Stadio San Siro.

Udinese vs Lazio: Prediction
It looks set to be a long and tough road ahead for Udinese, who have earned just one point out of a possible nine from their past three games. The Zebrette are already in free-fall, and if they don’t halt this downward slide, could easily find themselves in a relegation battle alongside teams like Crotone and Pescara.
Meanwhile, Lazio have been quite solid – although there are still definitely some wrinkles that need ironing out – and will definitely come into this match full of confidence. A win would see them temporarily leap-frog Inter into third spot and put them just one behind Napoli and two off league leaders Juventus. Still, don’t rule out Udinese.
They did pull off a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina and beat Milan (who themselves defeated Lazio 2-0). Since Lazio’s four goal blitz of Atalanta, they have netted just one goal on the road, whilst Udinese have yet to be shut out on home turf. The Biancocelesti are not expected to lose this clash, but a draw certainly is not outside the realm of possibility, either.
