Udinese vs Chievo
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 18 September 2016
Kick-Off: 11:30 UK,
Venue: Dacia Arena (Udinese).
Having picked up a morale-boosting win over AC Milan last round, Udinese will be hoping to continue onwards and upwards when they welcome Chievo to the Stadio Friuli on Sunday afternoon.
Stipe Perica’s late effort was enough to give the Zebrette a much needed victory at a ground they had not won since May 2007. More important, Udinese now have won back-to-back league games for the first time since December 20th, 2015 and January 6th, 2016. That was on matchdays 17 and 18 of the 2015/2016 Serie A term, when they beat Torino and then Atalanta.
Should they manage to beat the Flying Donkeys, it will mark the first time since September 2014 that Udinese have won three on the trot, when they defeated Napoli, Lazio, and Parma on matchdays three through five. And for a side that has narrowly escaped the drop in the past couple of seasons, they will need all the positive momentum they can need.
Meanwhile, although Chievo had to settle for a one-all draw at the Stadio Olimpico, the Flying Donkeys’ objective each season is merely to finish as high as possible in the table. They surely are not competing for a Champions League berth, and a Europa League spot may be even too high a goal. Rolando Maran’s side have established themselves as a pragmatic outfit who do not play the most exciting football, but it works.
However, the ex-Chievo striker will be banned for this fixture after being caught retroactively swearing vehemently on camera, meaning that assistant coach Christian Maraner will be in charge on Sunday. Both sides presently have no notable injuries or suspensions to report, meaning that each tactician will have their strongest starting XIs available for this match.

Udinese vs Chievo: Prediction
As noted before, Chievo have lost three out of their last four road fixtures. In addition, the Flying Donkeys historically have struggled in this fixture, with just two Serie A wins in their past 16 encounters. That being said, nearly 50 per cent – seven to be exact – of those finished as draws, with Udinese winning the other seven.
The Zebrette also have not just managed back-to-back wins, but back-to-back clean sheets as well. Chievo, meanwhile have picked up one point from their last two games and actually ended up dropping points from a leading position against Lazio. That being said, both teams are pretty evenly matched here – regardless of the overall stats against teams higher or lower placed than them. Udinese has scored one goal or less in 14 out of their last 20 home matches, whilst Chievo also have scored one or less in 15 out of their past 20 away games.
Hence, for all intents and purposes, a tight affair is certainly on the cards, but Udinese may have just enough to edge out the Flying Donkeys by an extremely narrow margin.
