Twente vs Groningen: Prediction
FC Twente headed for Waalwijk in a crisis following their four-game winless run but their plight continued and crisis worsened as they’ve lost once more, this time to the worst team of the league.
With their last victory coming on November 10th, The Reds plummeted down the table after a brilliant start of the season and currently sit at the 12th, just four points off endangered Venlo.
Gonzalo Garcia survived and didn’t face the axe during the holidays but will have to start picking up points if he wants to remain in Enschede. At De Grolsch Veste, The Tukkers has had mixed success; three wins and two draws, losing exclusively to top half sides.
A double from Kaj Sierhuis handed Groningen a 2-0 victory over Emmen and put an end to their winless streak as they head into 2020.
Sitting comfortably in the middle at 10th, Danny Buijs’ men still can catch the train for Europe, since they’re only four points away from Utrecht but they seem somewhat content where they are.
Apart from that terrible run at the beginning of the season, they’ve been chunking points regularly away from home with only one defeat since September 28th though their latest is seen as a disappointment as Trots van het Noorden drew with troubled ADO Den Haag.
Rafik Zekhnini picked up an injury for Twente and is unknown how long he’ll be out. Matos García is back following a tough knee injury but it’s perhaps too early for him. Calvin Verdonk is the last one who’ll miss Groningen clash as he’s serving out a suspension after a straight red v RKC.
Gabriel Gudmundsson’s the only one out of commission for Danny Buijs’ side.
All signs sadly points toward an unspectacular two hours of football at De Grolsch Veste; Groningen’s poor man’s (not as successful) Atletico Madrid, tough, uncompromising side while Twente is still finding their footing first season back in the top flight. We won’t see many goals here, Under 3 should do the trick.
As for my second recommendation, and this is purely on a hunch, go for a Draw. Twente’s h2h record suggests they do rather well against Green&Whites but I’m not sure they’re in the right state of mind to beat them again. As for Groningen, I wholeheartedly expect another play-not-to-lose game and there’s little to no doubt they’ll be happy with split spoils.
