Twente had a disappointing league campaign during the 2015/16 season, which resulted them finishing 13th in the table. Besides the on-field miseries, they were deducted 3 points for breaching the financial standards set by Dutch Football association. They association also revoked their Eredivisie license and were relegated to the second tier. However, a successful appeal on May 2016 saw the penalties revoked and Twente able to stay in the Eredivisie for at least another season.
Excelsior saved themselves from relegation by virtue of a point lead over the 16th placed Willem II. They were one of the worst defensive units in Dutch League during 2015/16, after letting in a massive 60 goals from 34 games. The two relegated sides Cambuur and De Graafschap had conceded more goals than them. They have a new manager in Mitchell van der Gaag, who was with Eerste Divisie outfit FC Eindhoven.

Twente head-coach Rene Hake has the luxury of a fully fit squad at his disposal as he prepares for the season opener on Saturday.
Hake has brought in two Manchester City youngsters on loan – the highly rated Turkish striker Enes Unal and Ghana youngster Yaw Yeboah. Both are expected to feature at some point in the game.
While defender Dejan Trajkovski, Dylan Seys and Fredrik Jensen are other new signings that could make their debut on Saturday.
