How do things work in the Turkish Topflight?

The Super Lig has been the topflight of football in Turkey since 1959 and in its current name since 2001. Beginning from 2020, 21 teams from across the nation fight for the league title in a double round-robin system in home and away fixtures from August to May.

At the end of the season, the winners of the league are crowned champions and qualify for the group stage of the Champions League. The runners-up make it to the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

With the third-place team making it into the qualifying rounds of the Europa League, a second spot in the Europa League is given to the winner of the Turkish Cup or the next highest placed team (If the Turkish Cup winner has already qualified for European competition through their league finish).

While the following two teams in the league table make it into the Conference League qualifiers.

On the other side of things, the teams that finish in the bottom three positions in the league are relegated to 1. Lig, the second division of Turkish football and are replaced by the top two teams of the second division along with the winners of the playoffs contested between teams that finish in 3rd to 6th places in the 1. Lig.

Super Lig – Nothing like anything

With passionate fans storming in the thousands to stadiums to support their larger-than-life clubs as they create a surreal atmosphere unseen in any other part of the world. Furthermore, with proven legends along with exciting young talents gracing the fields in Turkish stadiums, the league is truly nothing like anything.

The division has largely been dominated by three of the teams from Istanbul namely Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş, who have 57 league titles between them and have competed in the most campaigns of the tournament.

Trabzonspor meanwhile dominated the nation in the 70s and 80s. Based on these teams’ success, they have been honored with Golden Stars.

The other teams in the division have stopped these four teams from raising the top title in the nation just twice.

The top Turkish clubs are ever-present in the group stages of the European competitions, and some have made it deep into the tournaments. However, Gala, the nation’s most successful team domestically, is also the one with a major European trophy in their cabinet with the UEFA Cup / Europa League from 2000.

While the capacity of the stadium of teams competing in the division is no means small, the attendance; however, is rather non-uniform. High profile clashes witness a capacity crowd while the other fixtures of teams outside Istanbul struggle to make up the numbers.

How to Choose the best bets of the Turkish Super Lig?

The average goals witnessed per game in the league is comparable to that of the Premier League with 2.61 goals per game.

However, one should note that the average goals per game of each team in the division are close to the league’s average which is a different sight from other leagues where the stronger and weaker teams have a significantly higher figure.

With that being said, we do not see many low scoring games in Turkey when compared to the rest of the world and goal fests are an even rarer sight at least in recent games.

Another distinguishing observation in the history of this league is that a lot more teams have competed in the division than the top tier leagues of nations like Spain, Germany etc. This shows that a lot more teams with relatively less success have appeared in the topflight.

This as a result has made the traditional 1X2 wager a reliable and profitable option for punters over the years. This makes referring to the head-to-head history of teams a reliable tool while trying your luck in this league.

However, the league has been showing signs of moving on from their era of dominance as both the mentioned title changes have occurred recently and in the ongoing season, none of the Big Three is seen within the top four at the time of writing.

With the ever-changing trend of domination and game style in the league, finding successful bets have become increasingly tedious and unsuccessful for punters.

That is why our team of experts go through an endless number of stats and sources to come up with the best, two or three wagers for every fixture in the season, at least two days before the match kick-offs.
