Tottenham vs Manchester City
English Premier League
Date: Monday, 29th October 2018
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London).
Much to the consternation of travelling Manchester City fans, and the disappointment of most neutrals, Tottenham Hotspur’s match against City, originally scheduled for Sunday 28 October, has now been moved to the evening of Monday 29 October.
This is down to the fact that Spurs’ new ground, which is being constructed on the existing White Hart Lane site and was due to host its first game on 15 September, is still not completed and Wembley Stadium, where Tottenham has been playing its home games, is hosting an NFL match on the Sunday (when Philadelphia play Jacksonville). Several fixtures have had to be moved as a consequence, but this is the most significant in that it is a stand out game which is now much more difficult for City fans to be able to attend.
Scheduling headaches aside, this much-anticipated match will be an important milestone in helping us to understand exactly how each of the teams is placed this season.
Manchester City were almost unbackable favourites before the season began with most online bookmakers, and many pundits confidently predicted that Pep Guardiola’s men would match or even better last season’s record-breaking haul of 100 points. However, thus far, it hasn’t had things all its own way, and a number of bookies, see this Black Type review for one, have now priced City down on making back-to-back Premier League titles.
What is going according to the script is that City are top of the league — what is surprising, however, is that they are not sitting there alone. After 8 games, City have won 6, drawn 2 and are on 20 points, along with Chelsea and Liverpool, both of whom have identical records (although City is well clear on goal difference).
Spurs, sitting in 5th spot on the table with 18 points, likewise have 6 wins, but they have also lost twice (to Watford away and to Liverpool at home).
Prior to the most recent international break, City played out a 0-0 away draw with fellow contenders Liverpool (which most observers agree was a point gained rather than two lost), while an early Eric Dier goal was enough for Spurs to win 1-0 against strugglers Cardiff City at Wembley, after which Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino conceded, “It wasn’t the best performance.”
Before this encounter on 29 October, City will take on Burnley at home while Spurs will be away to London rivals West Ham.
Tottenham vs Manchester City: Head-to-Head
Since Pep Guardiola’s arrival at Manchester City, the two sides have played four times. Spurs won the first encounter 2-0 at White Hart Lane in October 2016, followed that same season by a 2-2 draw at the Etihad (January 2017). However, City dominated the next two encounters, winning 4-1 in Manchester in their first match during the 2017-18 season in December, followed by a 3-1 win away at Wembley in April of this year.
This match will be the two sides’ first meeting in the 2018-19 Premier League season, with the return fixture in Manchester to be played in April next year.
Tottenham vs Manchester City: Prediction
Given their recent form and head-to-head record, it’s hard to argue against the bookmakers on this one, with all the major online sports books installing City as clear odds-on favourites to win. The best price you can get currently on an outright win for Guardiola’s side is 10/11 with Betway, with all brands hovering around this mark.
If you fancy a Spurs win, you can get a remarkably generous 16/5 with BetVictor, although it is as short as 29/10 with some bookmakers.
The draw is currently priced at 31/10 with Marathon Bet and Unibet.
With both Sergio Agüero (5 goals in 8 appearances) and Raheem Sterling (4 in 7) in good goalscoring form, and a miserly defense that has thus conceded only 3 goals in 8 Premier League games, plus the fact that Spurs has conceded 7 times this season already, a 2-0 away win to Manchester City seems a highly likely final scoreline (and a good bet at 10/1 with BetFred).
Tottenham vs Manchester City Betting Tip
Given the fact that between them Spurs and City have scored 36 goals this campaign, some of the best bets for this match are in the Total Goals Over/Under market. Particularly enticing is the 9/1 you can get with Bet365 on Over 5.5.
When you take into account that City under Guardiola are noted for the way in which they attack teams from the kick off, another interesting bet is the 9/2 you can get with SkyBet on it scoring in the first 10 minutes of the match.
