Tottenham Hotspur vs Newport County
England – FA Cup
Date: Wednesday, 7 February 2018
Kick-Off at 19:45 UK
Venue: Wembley Stadium (London).
Newport County will have the honour of visiting legendary Wembley after earning the fourth round replay against English heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur with a brilliant defensive display in late-January at their Rodney Parade. Michael Flynn’s men will clearly enjoy the occasion, but we doubt it will be a pleasant one for them given both team’s form since the first leg in Wales.
The Spurs have picked up four points from two super tough league fixtures with Manchester United and Liverpool. They still sit fifth in the league ladder, but things look much better for Mauricio Pochettino and his men after the mentioned results.
Even though the Argentine manager fielded a pretty strong lineup in the first match against Newport, the attacking line led by Harry Kane has just failed to create past the League Two outfit’s defensive line two weeks ago. Given that the Spurs have a pretty rough schedule with Champions League ties against Juventus upcoming, we believe Pochettino should rest his star man Harry Kane here.
Still, Tottenham have plenty of weapons to hard the weak League Two side as this will be a nice opportunity for Fernando Llorente to shine. The Spaniard should be able to find the holes in Newport’s defensive line on Wednesday, particularly if we know that the Welsh outfit has shipped five goals in back-to-back losses to the likes of Lincoln City and Colchester United since the FA Cup draw with the Spurs.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Newport County: Head-to-head
The match played in late-January was the first ever head to head encounter between the two teams.
Newport’s “nine” Padraig Amond pushed his team in front late in the first half, but Harry Kane earned a replay for the Spurs only eight minutes from time.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Newport County: Prediction
There are no doubts the visitors will be highly motivated to get the result here, but the gap in quality between the two sides is just way too big for the Welsh team to even think of an upset in North London.
Since Newport’s defense has allowed five goals in last two losses in the fourth tier, we’ll go with the Spurs to net three or more goals at 1.53 as well as with Fernando Llorente to find the back of the net at the same odds.
