The New Saints vs Zilina
Europa League Qualification
Date: Thursday, 27 August 2020
Kick-Off at 18:30 UK/ 19:30 CET
Venue: Park Hall (Oswestry)
The home team is very well familiar with the European stage since 2000. They have been constant visitors to the qualifying campaign of both the Champions League and the Europa League. Their best performance so far was reaching the qualifying Play-Offs back in the 2010-11 season. Last year they were sent packing by Copenhagen in the second round in UCL qualifiers. In Europa, they lost to Ludogorets in the third round. So this time they are hopeful of recreating a similar performance.
The Yellow Greens are returning to the continental stage after a two years absence. They finished second in the domestic league last season but was a long way away from the top of the table in terms of points.
The New Saints vs Zilina: Prediction
The home side has not played a single game, not even a friendly since March 2020. So the lack of playtime will affect their chances of progressing to the next round. But they have home advantage which will be crucial. Especially since the visitors have been struggling in matches on the road, the home side will get chances to score. But I do not think a goal will be enough for the hosts to see this opposition out.
The Yellow and Greens have experience of facing top teams in Europe over recent years. They have faced teams like Athletic Bilbao and Spartak Moscow in the Europa League. Back in the 2015-16 Europa season, they won the home leg in the qualifying playoffs against Bilbao which was a major upset in Europe that season. So I am backing the away team to win with goals at both ends of the pitch.
