Thailand vs Saudi Arabia
2018 World Cup Qualifiers – Asia
Date: Thursday, 23rd March 2017
Kick-off at 12:00 UK / 13:00 CET
Venue: Rajamangala Stadium (Bangkok).
There is plenty of excitement in the Thai camp when they restart their World Cup qualification campaign at home against a free scoring Saudi Arabia.
Thailand football team are coming after winning the AFF Cup 2016 by defeating Indonesia on a 3-2 aggregate over two legs of football. This is their fifth title win, establishing themselves as the strongest team in the East Asian zone.
The War Elephants are sitting at the foot of World Cup Qualifying Group B with one point from their 5 matches so far. They lost their first four matches, before producing an amazing performance at home against Australia. The match finished 2-2, but the Thais had enough chances to mount one of the biggest upsets in the ongoing campaign.
On the other hand, Saudi Arabia are leading the group with 10 points to their name ahead of Japan (10pts) and Australia (9 pts). This is a tricky phase as the three teams along with UAE (9 pts) on fourth spot are separated by 1 point.
Their 10 points came from their first four matches which includes wins against Thailand, Iraq and UAE and a draw with Australia. While, they lost their most recent qualification fixture at Japan by a 2-1 margin.
Thailand vs Saudi Arabia: Head-to-head
It was a narrow 1-0 win for the Saudis when they met Thailand for the first leg of the group phase. The win extended Saudi Arabia’s unbeaten run against Thailand to 7 matches, with 6 wins and 1 draw.
Thailand managed a 0-0 draw when the teams met at the same stage of the 2014 FIFA qualifiers at home.
Thailand vs Saudi Arabia: Prediction
It is hard to predict what to expect from this Thai side, especially after watching their 2-2 draw against the Australians. Despite sitting at the foot of the table, the Elephants have certainly gained some confidence from the AFF Cup win in November. So, one must expect the home team to go with a positive attitude against a far stronger continental rival.
However, Saudi Arabia are the sure favorites to win this one outright. They are in excellent scoring form and scored at least once in their 5 qualifiers so far. They are coming on the back of a 7-2 win against Cambodia in a recent friendly, a team not that different from their Thursday’s opponent.
