Syria vs South Korea
Asia – 2018 World Cup Qualifier
Date: Tuesday; 6 September 2016
Kick-off: 13:00 UK
Venue: Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium (Malaysia).
Syria suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Uzbekistan at Bunyodkor in their opening match of the third round of Asian World Cup qualifiers. The Syrians were completely outplayed by their opponents and must consider lucky only to lose by a thin margin.
While South Korea looked comfortable against China as they rushed to a 3-0 lead after the hour mark. But they had to withstand heavy pressure from the visitors who even put two goals back. They will be relieved that they escaped with a 3-2 win at the final whistle.
South Korea and Syria are in a tough group alongside Iran, Uzbekistan, China and Qatar. And the unpredictable nature of these teams make every fixture at this stage important if they are to earn a ticket to the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia.
Syria vs South Korea: Head-to-Head
The teams are meeting in a football match after a six year gap with the latest being an international friendly played at the Baniyas Stadium in UAE on 30 December 2010. South Korea won the match 1-0 courtesy of an 83rd minute goal from Dong-Won Ji.
Korea are unbeaten in the last four meetings with Syria in all venues, with 2 wins and 2 draws.
Syria vs South Korea: Prediction
South Korea have shown their best qualities and vulnerabilities in the 3-2 home win against China. It is up to them to rectify the mistakes as they are set to face a side who love to frustrate higher ranked opponents.
Syria have lost four of their last six matches, winning just once during the period. Besides, they hardly come across teams of Korea’s quality very rarely these days. And a skillful and talented squad, Korea are favorites and could be winning this one.
Korea have scored the first goal in 11 of their last 12 matches, which also includes a friendly win against Czech Republic on June 2016. I also believe backing them to win first half is a better bet for this match.
