Syria vs China
World Cup Qualifiers – Asia
Date: Tuesday, 13th June 2017
Kick-off at 14:45 UK/ 15:45 CET
Venue: Hang Jebat Stadium (Malacca).
Syria have one last chance to stay in the qualification race when they face China on Tuesday evening. They are fourth in Group A, trailing the third placed Uzbekistan by a 5 point margin. They could know their fate even before the kick-off this fixture as Uzbekistan is playing away at Iran on Monday evening. An Uzbek win will automatically ends Syria’s qualification hopes, while a loss will give them a chance to edge closer to the third spot, which is the lone intercontinental play-off spot.
The Qasioun Eagles so far managed 2 wins and 2 draws from their 7 matches, while losing in 3 games. All their defeats have come away from home, while they are unbeaten in the 3 matches at home with a win and 2 draws and clean sheets in all of them. Syria’s lone away win in the campaign came against China, when the teams met earlier in October 2016.
Syria play all their qualification matches in neutral venues in Malaysia. They played their first two at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi. From the 1-0 win against Uzbekistan in the last round, they moved back to the Stadium Hang Jebat in Melaka.
China are already eliminated from the race for qualification after the 1-0 defeat to Iran in the previous round. It has been disastrous campaign for the team in Red. However, the team had shown tremendous fighting spirit under the new management of Marcello Lippi, but the damage was already been done.
The Dragons have just 5 points in their bag, much of which contributed by a brilliant 1-0 win against Korea at home on matchday 6. But they lost all their away games in the competition.
Syria vs China: Head-to-head
There is little to choose from the head-to-head record as China have 4 wins as against Syria’s 3 from 8 meetings between the two.
Also, this is the first time these two are grouped together in the World Cup qualifiers since 1980. The first battle is won by Syria on a narrow 1-0 margin.
Syria vs China: Prediction
This is a must win game for Syria, while China are playing for pride. With a decent showing in their make-shift home turf, Syria do look like a team raring to go. China’s problems in front of goal could do the home side a big favour. So literally, this could end in another home win for the Syrians.
