Switzerland have deservedly clinched a 0-1 victory over Greece on Friday and they’ll be looking to further boost up the momentum and fight for a success in front of the home crowd when they take on Panama four days later. The host should really come into this as massive favourites due to the obvious gulf in quality, but the CONCACAF zone rivals will also fancy their chances after a strong defensive display in only a narrow 1-0 defeat to Denmark on Thursday.
Panama were lucky to have secured their place in Russia this summer thanks to a last-gasp win over Costa Rica (who played for nothing back then having already booked tickets for Russia) in the final fixture of the campaign. It was a huge success for the team led by Hernan Gomez, but it’s really hard to expect miracles from this Panama side at the biggest stage.
Los Canaleros have a limited talent all over the pitch and particularly in the final third. Panama have only scored nine goals in ten qualifying games in the final round (they’ve bagged five in last two home fixtures) and the lack of quality up front could have best been noticed in the mentioned friendly with Denmark.
Given that La Nati’s main strength comes from the back, we’d really be surprised to see Panama on the scoresheet here. Vladimir Petkovic’s men have not conceded a single goal in last three matches (two playoffs ties against Northern Ireland and the recent friendly vs Greece).
