Sunderland vs Aston Villa: Preview and Predictions

Sunderland vs Aston Villa
England – Championship
Date: Tuesday, 6 March 2018
Kick-Off at 19:45 UK
Venue: Stadium of Light (Sunderland).

Aston Villa kept ground on Cardiff City in the battle for the direct promotion with a 2-4 victory away at Hillsborough Stadium last time out. The Lions, who were not in action at the weekend, will have a nice chance to back up the victory and pull out a similar attacking showing on Tuesday evening when they visit Stadium of Light to play the last-placed Sunderland.

The Black Cats did manage to clinch two points from last two league matches, but not many experts can be optimistic about their chances of saving the second flight status come May. Chris Coleman arrived on the bench in November last year, but he failed to shift team’s fortunes around as Sunderland obviously lack the quality to stay competitive in this tier.

The hosts have lost four and drawn three of last seven league fixtures and they have league’s weakest defensive line which has shipped as many as 62 goals in 35 matches so far. Given that they are now up against the third-placed Aston Vila, it’s really hard to see Coleman’s side getting the result and salvation points on Tuesday.

The man to look after is Bournemouth’s loanee Lewis Grabban who has bagged a goal in each of last two games for Aston Villa. This winter’s acquisition, who used to play for Sunderland previously, should have plenty of space to continue is fine spell of form and he is our top suggestion for the anytime goalscorer pick here.

Sunderland vs Aston Villa: Head-to-head

Aston Villa lead the head to head tie by 18 wins ahead of their 141st meeting with the Black Cats.

Each of last three H2H encounters saw both teams on target.

Albert Adomah and Joshua Onomah scored goals in a 2-1 win for the Lions when the two teams met in this term of the Championship at Villa Park.

Sunderland vs Aston Villa: Prediction

The gulf in quality between these two sides is massive and we can’t see how the league’s worst defensive line could potent6ially stop the red-hot attack of Aston Villa’s here.

The away win is our top option, while you can alternatively go with Lewis Grabban to score anytime at 2.60.
