Standard Liege vs Cercle Brugge
Belgium – First Division A
Date: Saturday, 11 August 2018
Kick-Off at 17:00 UK / 18:00 CET
Venue: Stade Maurice Dufrasne, Liege.

Cercle Brugge picked up their first win in the top flight of the Belgian football last weekend when they dispatched Lokeren 3-2 on the home patch.

They went unbeaten in the opening two games of the new First Division A campaign, marking a decent start to the season which seems them return to the elite class after spending three years in the lower-division of the Belgian football.

Nevertheless, the team led by Laurent Guyot will face a serious challenge to keep the unbeaten run going in the third round given they are about to take on the last term runners-up Standard Liege away at Stade Maurice Dufrasne on Saturday afternoon.

The Red also took four points from initial two games of the season, but their manager Michel Preud’homme will certainly make some changes to the squad here amid a tough Champions League tie with Dutch Ajax.

Standard Liege vs Cercle Brugge: Head-to-head

  • This will be the first H2H meeting in three years between these two teams, following Cercle Brugge’s return to the elite tier.
  • Standard were much more successful over the course of history, winning 2 and losing 7 of 31 meetings with Groen en Zwart.
  • It is interesting to note that only one of last 12 head to head outings saw goals at both ends.
  • The Reds won each of last three meetings with Cercle Brugge without conceding a single goal along the way.

Standard Liege vs Cercle Brugge: Prediction

The hosts come into this as heavy favourites and we’d be surprised to see any other scenario but a comprehensive victory for the Reds here.

They will enter the game in a strong mood after coming back from two goals down to clinch a 2-2 draw against Eredivise runners-up Ajax on Tuesday. Mehdi Carcela and Renaud Emond bagged goals for Preud’homme’s side.

Standard will still be without striker Maxime Lestienne, but Preud’homme has a strong firepower on display with the likes of Carlinhos, Duje Cop and Renaud Emond who should guide the team to a straightforward victory over the league newcomers.
