Sporting CP had to work hard to earn a win in their opening group game against Olympiacos. They rushed to a 3-0 lead by half time, but lapse of concentration in the dying minutes caused the Greek side to mount a surprise comeback. However, luck prevailed on the day and Sporting ended up with a 3-2 win.
The Lions will be a relieved bunch as this is their first away win at Champions League group stage since 2008. They had lost all their 3 away games last season, while only a draw came from the three back in 2014/15.
The matchday 2 fixture is expected to be Sporting’s biggest test as Barcelona are firing from all cylinders.
Since the Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid, the Blaugrana raised their game considerably and picked up 7 straight wins in all competitions. This includes the drubbing of a strong Juventus at Camp Nou on matchday 1 of the competition by 3-0 margin.
When much of the discussion has been surrounding Neymar’s exit from the club, Messi has switched his game to a different gear. The Argentine made sure that the Brazilian won’t be missed at the club and his stunning form is rewarded with 11 goals from those 7 games.
On the other hand, Sporting has some worries about the form of their prime striker Bas Dost. The Dutch striker has not scored in the last three games for the Lions after starting the season on brilliant form.
