SPAL vs Sassuolo
2018/19 Italian Serie A.
Date: Thursday 27 September 2018
Kick-Off: 18:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Paolo Mazza (Ferrara).
When the season started, no one would have expected SPAL and Sassuolo to be among the European places, but they are. Sassuolo come into this game having beaten Empoli 3-1 last round, which helped them to rebound following a 2-1 loss to a Juventus side led by a Cristiano Ronaldo brace.
SPAL, meanwhile, were crushed 3-0 by Fiorentina. Will that be the start of their downward slide, or will they be able to shake it off and get back on track? This is a side who had to battle for every point last term to avoid relegation, and that same fighting spirit has helped them so far.
However, much of their fight has been based off holding their defensive shape, and that was pulled apart as the Viola ran rampant. Having suffered such a heavy loss, all eyes will be on how the hosts respond, especially as Sassuolo themselves have been having an unusually good start to the season.
SPAL beat Atalanta at this same ground and that was by a 2-0 margin. Sassuolo, meanwhile have yet to win an away game this season, losing to Juventus and drawing with Cagliari. Meanwhile the hosts beat both Parma and Bologna so far on home turf and will be fancying their chances against Sassuolo, despite how the Neroverdi have started off well.
SPAL vs Sassuolo: Head-to-head statistics
Sassuolo have won just three of their last 12 away fixtures in Serie A
SPAL have won their last four home games
SPAL vs Sassuolo: Prediction
Despite SPAL’s heavy loss, they have a solid defensive record for a smaller side. Parking the bus isn’t always going to pay off, especially against the bigger sides, and SPAL are not expected to be contenders for a European spot.
Sassuolo have yet to keep a clean sheet on the road and SPAL’s defensive solidarity should help them to secure at least a point.
