SPAL vs Napoli
2017/18 Italian Serie A.
Date: Saturday, 23 September 2017
Kick-Off: 17:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Paolo Mazza (Ferrara).
In arguably the most entertaining match of the midweek round, Napoli absolutely routed Lazio 4-1 and now the Partenopei will get a break as they travel to face SPAL before resume Champions League action next week.
That’s not to sound disrespectful to SPAL, but in all honesty, barring a surprising collapse, SPAL aren’t expected to cause Napoli any trouble, and this fixture has arrived at just the right time for Maurizio Sarri’s side. Just as the Benevento fixture came as a perfect chance for them to take out their frustration after their surprise 2-1 loss to Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk, this could be a good chance for Sarri to rest some key players after their tough midweek fixture against Lazio earlier this week.
Napoli, of course, will need to pick up all three points against Feyenoord and so Sarri will need all hands on deck as Manchester City certainly are expected to get the job done against Shakhtar on matchday two. That could see Sarri perhaps rotate his squad, or at the very least make some key subs if the Partenopei can find an early breakthrough against SPAL – but of course, the hosts will park the bus in a desperate attempt again to try to hold out for a draw for as long as possible.
Will it work, though? They tried that same approach against AC Milan and it seemed to be paying some dividends. That is, until the 25th minute when they conceded a penalty, and it went downhill from there. Fortunately for SPAL, they’re not rock bottom just yet, despite losing three in a row, albeit they will find it tough to get anything against a Napoli side who are in cruise control.

SPAL vs Napoli: Prediction
SPAL have failed to score in their last three fixtures. That’s of no surprise though as they have not been able to venture forward and have rather opted to park the bus in a quest to try to grind out a draw. It’s backfired and rather than earning the point they want, they end up with nothing to show for it. Whilst they haven’t been humiliated 4-0 or 5-0, it ultimately doesn’t matter – they’re still losing and aren’t expected to get anything out of this fixture against Napoli, either.
Because of their opponents’ reluctance to venture out of their own half, Napoli may be able to get a clean sheet here as well as a relatively comfortable road win.
